Opinion: Compensation for slavery is an inviting idea in principle but would be a nightmare in practice. Reparations, in current conditions, would not repair anything, writes Lance Morrow.

Democratic candidates, posturing for advantage and jostling one another leftward, are testing the idea of making reparations for slavery an active issue in the 2020 presidential campaign.

They should stop and think. The notion may be too volatile to indulge in a presidential-campaign year. By pressing the issue they may ensure the re-election of Donald Trump, and, along the way, make race relations in America a good deal worse. Compensation for slavery is an inviting idea in principle but would be a nightmare in practice....

The Democrats, who are for reparations, should be the only ones to be financially responsible for this absurd agenda! What about reparations for the Indians who were also mistreated?

IT will be pushed further. The debt is owed for the effects of slavery. Keep writing pieces like this and it will open more and more Blk folks eyes on how the racist USA operates.

BHM FBA ADOS

I expect the WSJ, Fox Media, and the Economist to oppose reparations for slavery. These three media outlets would rather see slavery revived.

Nothing more than modern day oppression and vote buying. Want compensated for your ancestor being a slave, okay. Once the payment is made you're deported back to where you came from.

It is an idiotic idea - and yet another something-for-nothing scheme, not unlike welfare and all that goes with it. Almost everyone in the world could claim reparations from someone, if you go back far enough in history.

The very same thing for socialism!

How do we know who is entitled to reparations? Do they have to prove they are direct descendants and how do they do this?

Reparations for only black slaves is racist, and should be against the law.

Slaves were sold by fellow Africans, take reparations from there. There are also millions of people in slavery today. Surely eradication is a far more noble cause?

To me, as a white person 3Rd gen Irish American who has visited Africa, read Toni Morrison and Patrick Keefe and genocide stories , reconciliation is key. Jim Crown stole freedom from former slaves a second time. How would you feel?

I didn't, don't, and will not own any slaves. Anyway, slavery ended on Dec 18, 1865--154 years ago.

Pick any group of humans. Somewhere in their past someone was exploited and wronged. This is humanity sadly. You cannot pay everyone for every historical wrong done to their ancestors. Live life in front of you. Learn from history. Try and do better.

personally, I kinda like it that things are broken, decrepit & bound for extinction.

Anyone who believes they are going to receive free medical care, free college tuition, a guaranteed income, or reparations for slavery 150 yrs ago is as stupid as the Democrats think you are! Get a job and succeed on your own hard work.

Reparations with restrictions; Blacks must renounce US citizenship, relocate outside of the USA, and the government must end ALL affirmative action programs now and forever.

I want reparations for the endless wars in the Middle East, waged on false pretenses. 7 trillion dollars stolen from the American people.

That is what the left wants Anything that will distract from Trump's achievements

How do you know it would be a nightmare if no one has decided how it would be implemented?

I'm a millennial. I don't owe anyone a damn thing. My parents, if anything, but no one else.

Langley sadder. meh. blame the media for reporting what Barr said as gospel when you knew he was corrupt to begin with. You all stated a thing without any fact and now you want to save face. The press did this, Barr has always been Barr.

Freedom and slavery, the ‘central paradox of American history’Shortly after Jamestown colonists established rules on how to govern, they created a brutal system of laws on how to enslave And now the democrats support illegals that force, trade contacts to bring them here as indentured cheap labor slates at the Mexican border to smuggle them in. No difference the Democrat the party of blsck slates back then are now again slave traders of illegals again. Jesus! I wish hate wasn't so profitable. I wonder how America could make that right

Opinion | Trump’s slander doesn’t enlighten the abortion debate. It obscures it.Sen. Ben Sasse’s “born alive” abortion bill is not simplistic or irresponsible.
