Opinion: Tesla’s new SUV model shows just how silly the Green New Deal really is, henryolsenEPPC writes

Tesla superchargers in Mojave, Calif. By Henry Olsen Henry Olsen Columnist focusing on politics, populism, and American conservative thought Email Bio Follow Columnist March 13 at 4:59 PM Tesla is expected to announce the launch of a new SUV model, the all-electric car company’s first foray into the fastest growing submarket in the United States and China.

The Green New Deal’s ambitious goals — a 40- to 60-percent reduction in greenhouse-gas emissions by 2030 — cannot be met unless virtually all transportation and home heating and cooling needs are nearly emission free. That’s because about two-thirds of all U.S. greenhouse-gas emissions come from transportation, electricity generation, and other heating and cooling of houses and commercial buildings.

Improved battery technology, therefore, is the only viable solution to this dilemma. If batteries could be made more powerful, solar or wind power could be stored cost-effectively and shipped to the locations that use electric power. Instead of connecting to a grid of wires, homes and buildings would draw power from on-site-installed batteries, which theoretically could be recharged by on-site solar panels or wind turbines. Cars would also recharge from these home batteries.

henryolsenEPPC Of all the clueless bad-faith nonsense written about climate change by the MSM, this a real standout.

henryolsenEPPC Henry: This piece is a clear example of clickbait journalism at Tesla’s expense. Why say the average Tesla costs $42,900 and then claim the car only drives 220 miles? The $43,000 Model 3 actually drives 325 miles. Purposefully misleading? Or just uninformed?

henryolsenEPPC Tesla's Green New Deal model:

henryolsenEPPC Is your argument seriously that because the GND does not include the word “battery” that it ignores the problem? Improving and creating new battery technologies would fall squarely into section 4 re: goals and projects, see e.g. clauses (A), (D) and (E).

henryolsenEPPC The GND is not silly. Here's a chart of how the price of batteries has fallen in recent years. Similar curves exist for solar and wind. Yes, we spend too little on R&D, but what really drives down costs is deployment, driven by policy.

henryolsenEPPC WTF...you’re going to fight a climate apocalypse with charges of “Socialism!” You are truly without merit.

henryolsenEPPC You get 220 miles for $35k, ~7% more than the cited average. You can get 325 miles for $43k, the average Tesla price cited. Or 264 miles + autopilot. Saying you only get 220 for a third more is not true. And the average American commutes 40 miles a day. 220 is plenty of range.

henryolsenEPPC What a garbage take.

henryolsenEPPC ‘Tesla’s Model 3, which has an average sticker price of $42,900, offers a battery large enough to fuel 220 miles of driving, a much smaller range than its gas-fueled competitors.’ $43,000 gets you 325miles. Stop misleading your readers, it’s unethical.

henryolsenEPPC Mungi23

henryolsenEPPC I don’t even know where to start with this drivel. Do better, strawmen falseequivalence begthequestion allthefallacies

henryolsenEPPC So finding alternative energy sources and creating new jobs that don't yet exist is a risk to Henry Olson's freedom. I know disingenuous or crazy when I see it and this opinion piece is it.

henryolsenEPPC This is garbage.

henryolsenEPPC This article is as disappointing as the title. GreenNewDeal is coming and there is nothing you're going to be able to do about it.

henryolsenEPPC Nice propaganda Bezos, we will still take all your money.

henryolsenEPPC Old man yells at clouds. The gist here seems to be that we shouldn’t have to make any sacrifices to save the planet and, by extension, ourselves. If we can’t have all the conveniences we want, let’s just torch the place...

henryolsenEPPC Or we could make society not reliant on a multi thousand dollar form of transportation.....? 🤔

henryolsenEPPC I remember when Prius first came out and the scoffing that abounded. Now hybrid vehicles are everywhere, even in government fleets.

henryolsenEPPC Don´t like it Bezos?

henryolsenEPPC omg socialism is coming for us - said every conservative fear-monger...

henryolsenEPPC I know where we can find $170Bil... stop giving rich execs absurd tax breaks.

henryolsenEPPC Yes, Washington Post, what this age really needs is your inane sarcasm. Thanks.

henryolsenEPPC I can see this author's father saying in 1960 'We can't go to the moon in 10 years. That's ridiculous!'

henryolsenEPPC I bet there was a similar article when MPG goals were introduced ....

henryolsenEPPC EVs aren't really gonna help solve climate change. But definitely help your children not get permanent brain damage from PM2.5.

henryolsenEPPC What’s so silly is that a stuffy old white man like you would side with Musk and Trump over an outspoken, brilliant woman like AOC Boring!!

henryolsenEPPC I know we’re all used to Moore’s law, and expect all tech to advance exponentially, but this is not the case with battery tech.. that being said, power density does get about 3% better per year, and those advances add up. Give it a decade and this article will be a joke.

henryolsenEPPC technology is known to douvle evry year this electric car hit job is noonsense

henryolsenEPPC green deal is about finding new, alternative sources of energy.

henryolsenEPPC

henryolsenEPPC TELL THAT TO DEMOCRATS!

Howard Schultz rebukes Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's Green New Deal: Trying to 'solve one extreme with another'Former Starbucks CEO and potential presidential candidate Howard Schultz says 'Green New Deal' proposal is just trying to solve 'one extreme with another' Howard Schultz is sounding reasonable. Could be tough for him to secure the Democrat nomination with talk like that. I would vote for this man, a lot of people don't want to hear the brutal truth, that will be his downfall. He will be cast aside because people are stupid and don't want to face reality. Wow, he's stupid.

Trump Energy Secretary Rick Perry 'absolutely' would talk with Ocasio-Cortez about Green New DealPerry's stance clashes with comments made by other members of his administration — including his boss, President Donald Trump. Watching Rick Perry as Gov of Texas, I never thought I'd say this, but he may be the 'strength' of Trump's Cabinet. Congressman Graves is an embarrassment, what a tone deaf jerk! Replace him, somebody! Rick perry! LOL. That guy thinks passing gas is still cute.
