Opinion: San Diego does not want to be Miami [Opinion]

” : San Diego needs more housing, especially for our low and very low income and homeless residents. But plans for a 60-foot-high apartment complex in Pacific Beach should be subject to vigorous public debate and, if appropriate, a legal challenge. That’s because the project is west of Interstate 5, in an area specifically protected from high-rise construction. In 1972, San Diego voters approved a 30-foot high limit in that and other areas west of I-5.

Now, a state agency claims these protections must yield to developers’ plans for multi-story, low-income housing. Our city “planning” director also thinks it’s a great idea. But we must insist on public hearings, a legal determination and/or voter-approved waivers before gutting our landmark coastal protections. It is 100 percent wrong to violate the coastal 30-foot building height limit.

A four or five story apartment complex on Garnet Avenue near Mission Bay Drive is the absolute worst location. It must be recognized this is near one of the busiest intersections in all of San Diego with a high accident rate. There will be extremely long wait times to make a left turn into that property with the high all-day traffic volume.

The intersection of East Mission Bay Drive and Balboa is already one of the worst in the city and as single-family homes are replaced with four-unit condos in the area, the traffic only gets worse. To tell us that our voter-approved 30-foot height limit can be ignored and at a time when we are told to cut back on water usage, that they can even consider this project, is a sign that the will of the people is not being represented well in Sacramento.

San Diego needs to model Miami.

Garnet and Mission Bay Dr. isn't even near the beach. This is the same asinine conversation we're having about development in Midway. Just property owners/landlords wanting to keep housing costs high.

Alright. Just read the article now. Great headline, I was already on board to hate whatever plan was happening. 60 foot complex in PB? I don’t care, anywhere north or south I would care, but PB is for college kids.

Hot take: San Diego is envied by every other city. We aren’t Frisco, LA, we definitely are not Miami or anywhere else. Our sports teams let us down every time and we still love them.

That fucker should move then

No we don’t actually- people not from San Diego however.

We need more housing … building upwards would be great… can’t be NIMBY. If we keep denying new housing development in areas like Santee, then raising the 30ft limit is one solution
