Opinion: Pope Benedict shows us how the Catholic Church went so terribly off-course

By David Von Drehle David Von Drehle Columnist focusing on national affairs and politics Email Bio Follow Columnist April 12 at 5:21 PM There was consternation among Vatican-watchers in 2013 when Pope Benedict XVI became the first pontiff in centuries to resign the papacy rather than die on the job.

Everything was wonderful until the 1960s, when the Devil induced secularists to question “the moral teaching authority of the Church.” With that as the problem, the answer is clear: Until the world resumes unquestioning obedience, there’s not much even a pope can do. Those who haven’t lived like pampered royalty for decades, flattered by ambitious priests and served by devout housekeepers, won’t recognize the world as Benedict paints it. For example: Do you remember when “sex films were no longer allowed on airplanes because violence would break out”? Do you recall when “pedophilia was . . . diagnosed as allowed and appropriate”?

OH PLEASE! The 'church' has known of and ignored abuse far longer than is stated. Give me a break.

Believe in GOD not man's religion.

Benedict was an appalling pope. He epitomised everything that is wrong with the Catholic church, and it seems he is utterly unrepentant. In contrast, Francis is someone I admire. And I'm an atheist.

By telling us the obvious he is underlying the fact the Mother Church has lost her compass in the fullness of teaching had through the incarnation of God AND evinced an ABSENCE of His guiding Spirit.

You QUIT bug out

“Excellent”

up yours. he's a sin. Pope Francis is the best man alive

Benedict is convinced that priests weren't playing dinky with young boys, assaulting young girls, and raping nuns before the swinging sixties. Blame the times, not the perverts. Sometimes, an ex-Pope is just a cranky old man.

The Catholic Church didn't went so horribly off-course, The people who covered the terrible act for long period of time and the Coward journalist who didn't write about it, Should held accountable for it.

Currently reading a book on the Spanish Inquisition, which was only one of many, many grievous ‘sins’ (including world’s largest pedophile ring) of the Catholic Church & its Curia. How anyone can believe in this corrupt, malevolent, evil institution is beyond me.

Anyway, Jesus Christ is coming soon to punish the world. Major house cleaning. Read the 3 days of darkness, by Saint Pio. Not * good news for the evil doers.

Ratzinger is a far right mf. His brother (sic!) was responsible while boys of the choir Regensburger Domspatzen were abused. FUCK THEM !

Well, it's the wrong people who need to be kicked out of the Catholic Churches, too much corruption. Start by kicking out Pope Francis. Because he's a fake.

The problem is with people in this county thinking their religion should be law. If you are religious at this point in 2019 you’re incapable of critical thinking or you just don’t want to think because it’s easier.

Maybe the Bezos PAC can someday show us how it went so terribly off course.

Being too accepting of homosexual pedophiles in order to fill priest ranks? 🤷‍♂️

By blaming other outside influences as the reason for the Church's sex scandals is not only a cop out but makes him and the Church look like the cover up/excuses is even larger and continues.

How did they go off course? It started by basing an authoritarian structure on ancient myths that may never be questioned. It all stems from that.

Where it went wrong? From the beginning when evil, greedy men used god to get what their evil hearts desired.

He is the right man to do so because the Nazis that took refuge in the Catholic Church after WW2 were the biggest culprits. Wasn't Benedict a Nazi soldier? RhetoricalQuestion

I iz here tsczar Romanov concur I Godz God concurd

If my father Jesus was a man who is the son of man if my father Jesus did not have a physical father? James 2:18 But someone will say, 'You have faith; I have deeds.' Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by my deeds.

Benedict is pathetic... everybody knows that Boccaccio wrote Decameron before the '60s 'sexual revolution' . His bullshit doesn't begin to justify the abuses of Catholic Church over centuries or continents.

it's always been off-course, read some history.. the worlds largest paedo club.

Opinion: It all began after Jesus 'departed', and ROMANS took over 'The Church'. The end!

We need BACK Pope Benedict ASAP!

Only hypocrites went off course, not an entire people supporting molesting kids Keep predators out of society everywhere

Unfortunately, the Catholic Church has been covering up for decades (and likely centuries), and only now because they are getting significant backlash with people leaving, do they see there is a problem.

Is it the start of the end of Roman Catholic empire?

I thought Ratzinger had been ordered to keep a LOW profile. His recent words are certainly an EMBARRASSMENT to the Catholic Church and the Pontifex

Sexual revolution of 1960s led to Church abuse crisis, ex-pope saysFormer Pope Benedict has blamed the Catholic Church's sexual abuse scandal ... ummm nope. It's either that or a combination of the Church's refusal to allow priests to marry and have a normal sex life like their human instincts tell them to, so they repress that desire and it bastardizes into child molestation. One of these is true, the other is BS. The Church's obsession with preserving it's own wealth, and therefore banning marriage in the priesthood is probably a bigger factor.

Retired Pope Benedict blames sexual revolution and church laws for abuse scandalThe essay immediately raised eyebrows, seeming to interfere with or even contradict Pope Francis' own efforts to confront one of the most critical issues facing the church. Sexual revolution is responsible for catholic priests abusing children? That take some brain gymnastics - then again, he is so very ancient already. FakeNews nvr mentions Islam’s stance on kids. Marry them at 4! Yeah, sure. The laws and the revolution are what causes Father Pedophile to touch little boys. This is why I’m going non-denomination.

And instead of telling him he's terrible and wrong, you go ahead and give him a louder voice for his horrible opinions. It was the gangsta rap and peppermint schnapps!!!!!
