Opinion | Patricia Grisafi: Natalie Portman says that sexualized roles as a teen harmed her. When will Hollywood listen? - NBCNewsTHINK

? In a world where “adult” means “get your tits out,” what can you do if you want to transition to the next phase of your career without sexualizing yourself? Hollywood doesn't seem to know what to do with pubescent girls, doesn't seem to understand how their brains and bodies work and certainly doesn’t seem to care.

When Portman shared her experience, I couldn't help but think of another story I had recently read. “Stranger Things” actor, 16, was Christmas shopping when an insistent fan refused to leave Brown alone. The fan was recording her, Brown said in an Instagram story she posted after the incident, and not respecting Brown’s boundaries.

“She said, 'Can I take a video of you?' I said, 'Um, no,'" Brown said. The fan refused to leave Brown alone, which made her feel uncomfortable. “At the end of the day, I don’t need to justify it to anyone. If I don’t want to be taken a video of, I don’t have to be," BrownInstead of sexualizing child actors before they are even aware of what sexual power and agency is, Hollywood needs to come to terms with the harm it has caused.

While an encounter with a belligerent fan is not the same as feeling sexually threatened by older men, the core of the issue is the same: When can a child actor say no? The power to say the word “no,” which both Portman and Brown emphatically repeated, is so fundamental to developing a sense of self that it’s no wonder that when child actors are unable to say it, it has a corrosive effect on their development.

With the #MeToo movement, consent culture is gaining strength. In that culture, we are presented with a model that can help guide us away from actions that can traumatize others and ourselves, as people are empowered to say no and to maintain boundaries. As a parent, I’m teaching my son consent culture. Hollywood needs to take lessons, as well.Patricia Grisafi, Ph.D., is a freelance writer and editor.

THINK Perhaps she needs to have a word with her parents. Leon was a great film.....

THINK Her path to fame was built on baby-faced flicks. Even in StarWars she played some thin teenie princess. Please!

THINK That argument should be taken to her parents/guardian

THINK She was forced into taking those roles? Stop.

THINK Those roles paid well too.

THINK Female children are being abused sexually all around the world. Drugs, prostitution, sex trafficking, murder n forced child bearing. Natalie I love your acting I’m sorry u felt sexualized. U n family had a choice many women never had that choice.

THINK The Professionsl was a great movie, a classic. One of her best roles. The director’s cut is even better. She should not say all her roles were bad when she was younger or we would have never had that excellent movie.

THINK what's about parents? let the children go this way?

THINK They should stop drinking childs blood... that would be great

THINK They are no better than politicians. Remember they are the so called swamp people. No wonder they are hypocrites.

THINK This article totally ignores the plight of victimized young male actors - think the ‘Coreys’ and so many others.

THINK Obviously... The Professional? Where were her parents when she was cast in that role? Parents should set aside their desire for fame by proxy and recognize that Hollywood will chew their kids up.

THINK so, was she at any point forced to accept any role?

THINK Blame her damn parents then. She must be hurting really badly in her 10 houses and crying in her indoor pools each night. Oh the horror.

THINK Maybe Hollywood would listen when it happens, not years later when you’re a high paid actor

THINK Where were her parents? Hold them accountable!!

THINK She played a stripper in CLOSER just saying 😏

THINK Hollywood is dead. No one cares what these people do anymore. Literally, finding work and food is at the forefront of half of America.

THINK Ah shaddup.

THINK If they don’t make money, they’ll stop. I’m doing my part, got bored with the lack of anything original, quit going.

THINK hollywood has always sexualized its young....

THINK 😢

THINK Where were her parents or guardians to protect her from those type of roles.

THINK When will parents?

THINK You literally read the script and screenplay ahead of time.

THINK I’m going to be blunt here. No one forced her to take those roles. She chose to do so of her own free will.

THINK Mathilda....?

THINK “Sexualized roles”. Now this is VERY different to being taken advantage of isn’t it? Don’t actors have script read thrus, audition for roles so therefore wouldn’t the actor carry responsibility here, not studios? Parents, agents not there to protect from such roles in 1st place?

THINK But that Cuties BS was stunning and brave 🙄

THINK I feel like she still cashed the checks 🤷🏿‍♂️

WendyPond123 THINK When real life offers girls a real chance? privilege

THINK Hollywood needs to rename. And be redone

THINK RENEGANDO DE SU BUENA VIDA?

THINK Her parents were pimping her.

THINK Which movies were these now..?

THINK Hollywood doesn't give a shit. All they want is money.

THINK So I guess the commercials I’ve seen where she touts her sexuality to sell a product is a manifestation of that. Bet the check still cashes.

THINK Were her parents not on set? Maybe stop pointing fingers outside of your family and blame the people who's job it was to protect you from perverts like this.

THINK And she has done what to prevent reoccurrence? Is she complaining about her $62million net worth?

THINK Heck ... I never imagined this stuff happened ... but I should have guessed ... we live in a fecked up world 😢

THINK i'm just bored i need a real partner you interested ...?just add me on kik jesusb35

THINK Who cares

THINK Parents need to set boundaries; her parents opted for cash instead.

THINK When we bully them enough or they see their daughters eventually succumb to it. Many women girls and women commit suicide over the emotional and mental harm the patriarchy has caused us. It’s a sick cycle until the women take charge or the men start caring.

THINK So, is she giving back the money she made making those movies? Or donating it for womens' causes?

THINK so why did you agree to do these roles?

THINK She made a lot of money off of those roles.

THINK The Jew cries out in pain as they strike.....themselves 🥴

THINK Who cares
