Opinion: 'I was hesitant about D.C. statehood. Now I believe it’s the only path forward.'

By Steny H. Hoyer May 30 at 9:11 AM Steny H. Hoyer, a Democrat, is majority leader in the U.S. House, where he represents Maryland’s 5th Congressional District.

Our founders, who prescribed the creation of a national capital not within the jurisdiction of any individual state, never intended for those living in it to be denied representation. Defending the new Constitution, James Madison assured his fellow Americans that residents of this new capital district would happily live there “as they will have had their voice in the election of the government which is to exercise authority over them.” For 228 years, our government has denied them that voice.

I now believe the only path to ensuring its representation is through statehood. Legislation granting representation in the House could be revoked in the future; statehood would bring D.C. residents a permanent voice in our elected institutions. Eleanor Holmes Norton, the non-voting delegate from the District in the House, has introduced a bill to admit the District as a state, and I will cosponsor it.

As an advocate for voting rights throughout my life and my career in public service, I have been proud to stand on the front lines of protecting and expanding access to the ballot box and equal representation in our democracy. That’s why, for more than 20 years, I’ve stood shoulder-to-shoulder with those calling for D.C. residents to gain equal representation in Congress.

How about no?

DC isn’t a State any more than Chicago, LA , or NYC are states

D.C. is a CITY...it is NOT or ever should be a state. Fix it by putting D.C. into the state of Maryland. Its that simple.

He’s gets dumber every day. DC was NEVER set up to be a state. Move ALL the government agencies OUT of DC.

just a way to try to shoeforn in another vote that is expected to be democrat in the upcoming election. BS is BS...

Jeez the swamp is really grasping at straws to get votes, senators and other career hacks

DC Statehood will have a chance once gerrymandering has reached critical mass, certainly not a second before.

That and Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. Everyone in these states are part of the United States!

Absolutely overdue

Statehood doesn't get them an 'equal voice in govt'. It gets them 30 -40 x the representation that the average NYer or Cal. resident gets.

ВОТ ОН ХОДОК . НУ КА СДЕЛАЙТЕ ЕМУ ЧТОБ ОН КАШЛЯЛ

Never. There is a specific reason the Federal Govt's seat is not in a specific state, so that that state would not dictate federal policy. DC can never be a state.

No.

Do we really need two Dakotas?

What’s the path forward for the Trump obstruction case after Mueller’s report? After nearly two years, special counsel Robert Mueller released his long-awaited Russia report, and while Mueller declined to declare one way or another whether the president obstructed justice, President Donald Trump is far from exonerated. Corey Brettschneider, author of “The Oath and the Office,” joined THINK to discuss what happens post-Mueller. THINK I tried to tell someone this before. There is a statute of limitations. THINK Mueller didn't find Trump committed any crime. What's more, not a single American was charged with collusion. THINK Trump hasn’t committed any crimes, it was Obama and his rats nest who were the criminals. The Horowitz IG Report comes out soon and confirm this.

Opinion | It’s time for Republican women to speak up for reproductive rightsI work in the Trump administration. The fight for global gender equality needs Republican women on its side. Who cares? Not supporting abortion is not that big of a deal. Supporting abortion is not that big of a deal. You can think abortion is wrong and you can think restricting abortion is wrong. Calm down. The media turns abortion into a zombie apocalypse scenario. There is nothing reproductive about abortion. Abortion is termination. Republican women (largely wealthy and white) do have abortions. They just want to stop others from having them. Republican pols have paid for their mistresses abortions. Disingenuous. Keep it SaveLegalRare If they really want to stop abortion, they'd support free birth control.

Obama surprises kids at D.C. after-school program with pep talks and softball'I'm going to be on the lookout for you,' the former president told the kids at Washington Nationals Youth Baseball Academy. 'You're going to do something important. You're going to make a real difference.' The word “Statesman” used to have some meaning... agree or disagree at least I never had to question his intention. He was just trying to help others and the world. Thank you Mr. President. ❤️ Lord, I hope he didn't throw a ball in front of the kids. God forbid they learn to throw a ball like Obama.
