More than a century and a half after the ratification of the 13th Amendment, slavery is a hot issue in the Democratic presidential campaign. “We need a national, full-blown conversation about reparations,” says Sen. Elizabeth Warren.
“I believe this country needs to address the original sin of slavery,” adds former Housing Secretary Julián Castro. Sen. Kamala Harris says the idea of reparations “means different things to different people,” and to her it means “we need to study the effects of generations of discrimination and institutional racism.”
Suggesting that reparations are punishment is white supremacy on full display. White supremacists, believing that whites are the most important people on Earth, make white people the primary subject of any issue.
No reparations!
Do an image search for Jay Winik find a guy who looks like he was taken out of central casting to make this argument.
Half the country hated slavery enough to have a civil war to end it, the benefactors were pretty much the origins of cigarette companies pirates and a few slave merchants.
Identity politics is a Machiavellien tool of decision, divide and conquer. Instead of cherry picking history, try uniting and winning.
Is there anyone still alive today who was actually a slave back in 1865? Okay, a rhetorical question. On the flip side, my ancestors didn’t start arriving in this country until about 1900. So what is my share of the blame?
Every race on earth has been enslaved, disposessed, invaded, occupied, colonized From ancient times to WWII the world was one of competing empires, before that it all started when the first guy in Africa threw a rock at they guy next door because he wanted what the other guy had
To hold someone accountable today for wrongs that were norms or issues of the past can’t be right. Prepare for the future, live in the present & leave the past in the past to receive God’s blessings! God is still in control and you can’t impeach him!
No shit. Relatively speaking, no one actually believes this. Quit stoking the fire by promoting ideas incredibly few support
Reparations is a debt America owes to the American descendants of slavery, not a debt owed by state or individuals and for the record the slaves also fort in the the civil war without proper weapons by great great great granduncle Tom Rodes went to fight in the civil war
No

Selling their souls for votes, and warren should donate every penny she has to indians to start it all off. She doesnt even see her own hypocrisy
I see clear racism in this article and its image. I wouldn't be surprised if this image itself has some racist history. Shame on you
And you people put this image because?!?
Uh, no. But Tuskegee.
johnmcluwooden Clearly most of the commenters didn’t read the article.
Reparations are not punishment. Reparations are compensation for exploitation.

AMLO is asking Spain & its King to apologize to Mexico for Colonisation & abuses to the natives in 1500s. Wonder if West Africa and modern USA is going to ask apology to UK & Holland for bringing slaves to USA, both regions suffered consequences of slavery
It will never be enough
Funny how you never see Elizabeth Warren, who also voted in favor of protecting Monsanto, saying ANYTHING about crimes against Native Americans. Start there.
Lol. Funny. Get a job
Where does it end then?
Reparations aren't 'punishment'.
This is madness! Stop talking about racism and it will desapear...
it's not collective if it only affects the 1%, and being denied tax breaks because we are a nation, not a fiefdom, is not really punishment. -just sayin
Hahah, propaganda rag of old white people doesn’t like reparations, what a surprise
