Opinion: Confessions of a San Diego fair-weather fan who finally found a home team [Opinion]

I closely followed the basketball team’s run for the Mountain West title and tournament win, and its first Final Four and National Championship appearances — elated with Lamont Butler’s buzzer beater against Florida Atlantic and crestfallen when the loss to UConn became apparent.

As a student journalist for the school’s Daily Aztec newspaper, I recall asking university President Thomas B. Day if SDSU spent too much on athletics. Today, as a card-carrying lifetime alumni member, I have come to agree with his view that having competitive sports teams adds value to the college experience.

I’ve found it is much easier to be a fan of my college’s sports teams — easier to forgive them their losses and revel in their successes. And it’s nice to know they won’t move to L.A. Now I resolve to be more than a fair-weather fan and show my team spirit even if SDSU never has another season like this one. Speaking of fair weather, I also dug my dad’s Bills sweatshirt out of mothballs, because, well, it’s been chilly.
