Opinion: Community building will be my biggest focus in 2023. I urge you to join me. [Opinion]

Now, it would be simplistic to dismiss those as “bad years” and the one that just ended as all-good. That would be as unwise as proclaiming that the pandemic is fully over and we have nothing to be careful about. We must always be vigilant and protective and the two previous years taught us that.

What I noticed the most in this past year was how people seemingly embraced being in communities. The last two years were extremely divisive and I won’t get into all the reasons why. But I think it is safe and factual to say, yes, as a country we were indeed divided, both physically and emotionally. I regard community as a macro and a micro term. By way of example, my communities are Christians, Colombians, Americans, San Diegans and fans of my favorite sports teams. It is because I am part of all of those things. Surely I’m part of other communities too numerous to name here. But here is the key: If you are not a member of any of these groups, we’re still in community together as humans! I think we lost sight of that for a while.

After a challenging 2022, Greater Cleveland Food Bank bracing for a tough 2023Demand for services remains elevated. Inflation remains high, driving up costs for both clients and the Food Bank. And while the public stepped up during the pandemic, offering donations and volunteer work, the question is how long can that last. The wonderful Biden economy, increasing business for food banks everywhere. Another reason to stop giving to panhandlers. They just throw whatever you give them (other than cash) on the ground causing litter to blow all over our city. If they can make it to all these off-ramps, they can make it to the food bank.
