Op-Ed: Gen Z students seem to dislike both political parties. What will make them change their minds? (via latimesopinion)

The perception of a liberal, monolithic student body on college campuses needs to change. Critics of higher education often rail against the left-leaning prejudices of students, but the fact of the matter is that the political hearts and minds of undergraduates are not overwhelmingly aligned with either major political party.

Moreover, the collegiate figures show that students are no more Democratic than the nation as a whole.about 33% of registered voters identify as Democrats, about 3 in 10 identify as Republicans, and the remainder are independents. Although college students are less likely to be Republican and more likely to be centrist, they are not necessarily more leftist than the rest of the nation.

opinion Nothing.

opinion dislike both parties. Would shit on the young for being the personal device generation. In this instance thats a good thing, Dont Support Red or Blue im with you !

opinion (raises hand) Effing DOING something in office.

Probably join politics or form a 3rd party, that’s if… democrats allow them to lose votes.

opinion Why do they have to?

opinion Thinking of them as GenZ is a mistake and leads to simplified numbers analysis. Their core is pluralism and by nature plurals do not swarm to majorities and certainly away from non-individualized identities. They will actually care about policy - not monikers. GENERATIONS

opinion Liberation.

opinion Independent != moderate

opinion Like every single person that is Gen Z? You interviewed them all for this piece and that was the definitive answer?

opinion Maybe they’ll make up their minds after Republicans win the house and senate and refuse to certify any election won by anyone but a Republican. It’ll be far too late by then to avoid minority rule but at least they stuck to their conviction that both parties are the same.

opinion This is true…my 2 don’t claim either party. Would say they and their friends are more to the left than me and are mad as hell. Especially about climate change. Half their lives they’ve lived their summers surrounded by fire. They use their eyes and they don’t watch Fox “News.”

opinion I think we are about to see in a year.

opinion Why would we need to change their minds? They are smart.

opinion Reading a better newspaper would help.

opinion They're right.

opinion Smart kids. They see through the lies and bullshit coming from the rich people's corrupt and rigged two party system.

Will_Bunch opinion I'm a boomer-tailender, & I not only dislike both parties I stopped voting for their candidates at all levels of government. Their bipartisan policies the past 4 decades have turned me into a reliable 3rd party voter. I strongly doubt either party will ever get my vote again.

Will_Bunch opinion change their minds? how about trashing both parties and starting over? they're both sick to the core

opinion But Gen Z loves the LA Times, right?

Will_Bunch opinion . Nothing How about the extinction of *both* political parties for starters as a start, however

Will_Bunch opinion They only like themselves

Will_Bunch opinion How about a viable third option that focuses on their issues and actually works to resolve them — because Binary is not where it’s at.

Will_Bunch opinion Gulags?

Will_Bunch opinion Younger generations don’t feel the urgency to belong to political parties. Why should we? We don’t see either major political party truly fighting for us. I’ll donate to individual candidates but never parties. MedicareForAll CancelStudentDebt FightFor25 ClimateCrisis

opinion Nothing. Both parties suck.

opinion The thing that won't change their minds is the default position of Democrats, who always just shrug and say, 'young people don't vote.' You don't give them a reason to vote for you, and they won't vote. They won't vote for you now and they won't vote for you in twenty years.

opinion They don’t need to change their minds.

opinion I am a centrist no matter what. I can stand in the middle and tell both radical Republicans and radical Democrats to suck it. -Obama-McCain centrist Gen Z

opinion Honest reporting. Maybe mention that Republicans don't believe in climate change, or same sex marriage, or body autonomy, that they treat females are lesser - can't be trusted to make decisions for themselves or get paid the same, they want to gerrymander & cheat to win.

opinion Why should they change their minds? A better question is: what new parties or systems will they invent to transcend the dysfunctional political garbage they are not interested in being saddled with?

opinion They need to learn that conserving the evil ways of doing things in the past would hurt them and the nation.

opinion Hopefully nothing.

opinion Teach them about fascism. Teach them that fascism isn't the same thing as democracy.

opinion Maybe not having two virtually identical parties?
