"They chattered. Very chattery," she recalls with a laugh."And so I could see him just kind of shaking his head" and smiling.
That day at St. David's hospital, on June 5, the medical staff had something to tell Melissa Hickson. They were going to stop treating her husband. And move him from the ICU to hospice care. The recording is hard to hear, the doctor's voice a bit distant. But he tells Hickson:"The decision is: Do we want to be extremely aggressive with his care or do we feel like this would be futile?"Hickson challenges the doctor."What do you mean?" she asks.
Anderson says Michael Hickson was much sicker than his wife may have realized: He had sepsis, pneumonia in both lungs and that his organs were shutting down. It's not unusual for caregivers and medical staff to fight. It's unusual, though, that a probate court would step in.
DevanStahl Let me correct the first sentence in your tweet. The hospital made no decision in this case, the legal surrogate did. The hospital recommended a plan of care that was medically appropriate, the legal surrogate agreed. That’s how it is done. Not a conspiracy.
WHAT?!
This case needs investigation. Why would a care facility be given medical decision making rights over a living spouse or family member? The hospital wasn't overwhelmed with Covid cases & it does look like staff didn't want to treat him anymore. 😔 R.I.P. 🙏
'Conservatives and their death panels...'
I absolutely believe this family's account. The lack of national guidelines coupled with the sudden disappearance of any regulatory oversight of hospitals during covid19 is dangerous for patient care. There's no transparency or consistency adding too many people's pain
💔🙏
💔
I changed the world in science and psychiatry in 2009 and NPR said nothing but you get crap like this.
Praying for you. Such sad story. i was born premature, had it not been for JFK POTUS, being Catholic, Right to Life, I would have been quietly disposed of. Never has the world seen this type of HATRED since German WWII. I am sorry your love was treated so disrespectfully.
He had to many strikes against him. Black male, disabled, to much medical debt, ect sad but trust hospitals are corporations and don’t do things for the betterment of you. Ex 900$ band aid ect.🙁
Hospitals are the worst place to go if you get covid. They are killing the people, not the covid
Katrina5Mm This makes me sick. But honestly this doesn't surprise me. Texas doesn't value their disabled community. 2015-Texas cut medicaid benefits for children, 2016-cut therapy services for disabled children, 2018-cuts for attendants for adults made it difficult to get help......
Cubfan13241 Unfortunately cases like this are far more common than you think. If he was septic and was beginning organ shutdown I understand why they stopped the aggressive treatment. It's sad....hopefully this will cause facilities to make changes especially in communication.

Why is this STILL a thing? Black men and women deserve the best care available, but it’s like they have to prove they’re worthy. They have the RIGHT to expect Doctors who actually HONOR their Oath. My friend can’t get pain meds for impacted teeth; has to suffer until his surgery
But hey it’s their right to not wear a masks, party of pro life back at it again👏🏻
And yet we won't let people choose to end their own life, instead medical professionals make that choice, assisted suicide should be a topic at the forefront of discussion right now but it's not
What happened to do no harm? I thought doctors had to treat patients until the very end. There seems to have been a severe miscommunication and misunderstanding between the doctor and the patient’s rights and desire to keep fighting the disease. 😢
So sad,
Medical staffed failed at doing no harm. Ethically unacceptable. I pray Melissa and her children prevail and continue to expose this medical staff for what it is.
So sad. RIP sir.
DeathPanels do exist. Thanks a lot Obama.
needs investigated...
This is so scary. My brother died after being on ecmo for a week. I often wonder if they just gave up on him because he was a black man. I hope they didn't, but it'll always be in the back of my mind.
this is bs .. I feel the hospital should have done more regardless of what his disability. This is the problem it should not matter what our biases are or whatever.. every life is precious and I feel that every person should get the treatment they need.
Sounds like socialist Heath care
😢😢😢
Heartbreaking. How did we come to this?
NO ONE HAS THAT RIGHT BUT THE PATIENT !
Also makes you wonder if a lot of the disproportionate deaths among black people is because they aren't being the same amount of life saving treatment others are getting. I mean, they already decided to euthanize him.
they did this because of costs. Covid patients cut into big insurance's profit margins big time
Terrible how in the U.S. this is allowed.
How horrible. Many hospitals are now using the MATH+ protocol with great success. It includes intravenous vitamin C. There is also a prevention plan (Eastern Virginia Medical School)
That's murder.
Deplorable, reprehensible
If we had single payer he would have never found a bed at a hospital. This case is a taste of what is to come if Biden wins.
This is so sad but what’s up with this...”A Texas probate court earlier this year had stepped in and appointed an elder care agency to make medical decisions for Michael Hickson. That happened after Melissa Hickson disagreed with a previous hospital....”🤔why?
This is horrible, and we as Americans have brought ourselves to this point.
But The Republicans told us it was the Democrats that were supposed to have the death panels.
Hospital could not talk. Some. *** ( Fill the blank) think they are level of God!
It happens all the time nowadays
“All Lives Matter”
Awful, heartbreaking 😞. I’m so sorry for all the families. I have a son that’s disabled. This thought is a punch in the heart for me sending all my ❤️
Rest in Peace, Mr. HIckson. Condolences to you Mrs. Hickson and family. This is very sad and troubling. Red alarm troubling.
How is that even possible? Doctors can only advice on what could be best!! It is the Adult or guardian who must DECIDE to terminate care, I find this story quite unbelievable, something doesn't seem correct?
Hydroxychloroquin+ zinc+ azithromycin= covid cure dare to prove me wrong?
MarkedByCovid
As this spouse of someone disabled...this is highly worrisome
The phrase 'death squad' comes to mind. How dare these doctors play God
can we say Medical Malpractice Lawsuit? What the actual fuck?
Death panels
This is a heartbreaking situation. I think an investigation would be helpful. A huge red flag (for me) is the fact that the wife did not have medical guardianship of her husband because a court deemed her unfit to make those decisions. 🚩🚩🚩🚩?
This is a cruel system. We should be treated as patients, not customers
So terribly sorry
We found TuckerCarlson and seanhannity’s death panels. In Trump’s incompetent response to the pandemic. wearamask
Welcome to the future with socialized medicine
Republican death panels.
The real sad thing is that the same had happened in eastern states but it’s happening again which is totally avoidable.
Court appointed medical agency was his medical guardian NOT his wife. UNREAL!
I was told there’d be no death panels under capitalism.
Can you interview experts in terms of quality of life expectancy for the patient and also when hospitals are overwhelmed of their resources so then the general public has an idea also from the professional standpoint as well?
So cruel and unfair.
I have very conflicting ideas on this. I am a parent of a disabled person. But I cannot imagine this situation
250,000 people die every year from doctors malpractice. $39,000 to the hospitals for each Covid patient... and blanket immunity for hospitals and doctors in places like New York. What could possibly go wrong?
The death panels Republicans warned of during the passage of Obamacare are finally here... Thanks to King COVID
So now they select who to save!!!
Didn't Kevorkian go to prison for doing something similar
So like a death panel?
Poor guy. RIP I don’t trust hospitals or doctors.
Heartbreaking. Especially because this situation could have been avoided with real leadership.
'death panels'
Had a similar issue w/ my in-laws and I could see the hospital was right. The resources were needed elsewhere, where there was more hope and likelihood of lives being saved. It hurts but it’s not about emotions. They’re doctors and they want to save people.
heartbreaking
That's what must have happened to Herman Cain right?
This is the death panels the gop was warning you about when Obama was president
