, plenty of people think that, when a vaccine does arrive, their country should get it first. Between March and September, researchers from the United Nations and the International Security and Development Centre, a research group in Berlin, polled some 11,600 people from 137 countries about their experience with covid-19. One of the questions asked how a vaccine should be distributed.
Such selfish views were surprisingly common. In Brazil, Finland and Portugal, over 40% of respondents said they wanted special access. In America, a whopping 46% said they wanted first dibs on a vaccine; just 41% said it should be made available worldwide . Indeed, of the countries with at least 150 survey responses, the United States was the only one whose residents preferred the selfish answer to either of the other options.
No matter who develops an effective vaccine first, those clamouring for it may be disappointed. Although Donald Trump has brashly promised to manufacture enough doses for every American by April, the head of Britain’s vaccine task-force
How about choosing the most susceptible regardless of where they live. Think: first reaponders, care givers, public workers first.
What a shock: the country that treats public health the worst feels entitled to a vaccine the most
Noice
How many and who was asked?
Nice
“Are you a kind internationalist or a selfish nationalist?”Your answer will be noted by your neighbour, the former Stasi informer.
Clearly India's magnanimity is more worthwhile considering that it is not as rich as Germany.
Tells you all you need to know about Americans....
Perhaps Germans mean that they pass on a hastily developed vaccine to others, so that they can suffer the consequences. Smart move
Seems like an extremely dubious poll.
There must be many very dumb German people.
Sharing the COVID19vaccine is the most Christian action!!!
Germans killed six millions Jews based on a race theory. They are not egalitarian. Judge by acts and not by funny polls. germany Holocaust worldwar racist
this is great. when we ask people directly if they have a poisonous, cruel, view of the world they rarely admit it. this question does the trick, and reveals which countries are brainwashing their citizens into absolutely demented ghouls. thank you!
still a shockingly low number of people understanding globalism, disease and timelines. sigh.
Nice
Lol at all the selfhating turds in here. Boys, girls, your taxes paid for that (and then some more through stimulus debts), it's only natural you get it first.
Less than 100 respondents per country on average, not sure if this is a meaningful survey. Also appears to have been sponsored and conducted largely by the Germans.
It's possible that Americans who chose 'my country' did so on the basis that America is indeed the most affected country also. It actually makes sense that way if you have a limited vaccine supply.
The world will soon reach natural group immunity, and there are also 4 Chinese and 2 Russian vaccines and that are almost ready, so that let your vaccines remain with you, we do not need them, but remember that the global economy is dependent on some and you need others as well
Wow, says a lot about the USA mentality - Make America great eh Trump
Gross
China and Russia are omitted? Wondering if this was strategic. Not surprising US has the me first mentality... also partially why they are harder hit by COVID.
Not measurably the most selfish nation in the world or anything...
We don’t deserve the vaccine first, are you kidding me? We f’d this up. The world should punish us for our lack of action, FFS.
The Economist is a globalist mouth piece. Ignore their propaganda.
Except I thought I read many won’t take it.
This doesn't really control for the fact that America is also the most likely country to be able to independently develop a vaccine. There's no sense in non-vaccine production capable countries responding 'my country first', since such countries depend on cooperation
I have seen documentaries on just how badly clinical trials can go wrong. I certainly want the vaccine however I feel quite cautious about this. All medicines have side effects and all medications affect people differently. I simply want to approach this as safely as possible.
Of*
It’s understandable.. The US is the epicentre of Covid19 with 100’s of 1,000’s dead or affected in some way, millions jobless & facing eviction.. ITS A TERRIFYING TIME!!! There are sayings: ‘Charity begins at home’ ‘You can’t save someone from drowning if you’re going under’
“In the event of a sudden drop in pressure, an oxygen mask will drop from above. Secure your own mask first before assisting others.'
Literally, the rest of the world says please keep your Bill Gates created vaccine to his created virus.
Actually the WHO Covid Initiative is likely one of the stronger possibilities that we also get the vaccine along with other participants. We a a small sampling of total worldwide development and testing. So all nations benefit. As we go it alone, we could also be last. Idiots
You can have mine!
Bc America is full of sociopaths. Trump is THE sociopath candidate 🤷♂️
Why, so they can not take it? America is so confused
Are we surprised? I honestly expected higher
This is why we don’t deserve it at all.
Makes sense considering the number of cases/deaths in the US comparatively.
The American Way.
No shit people don’t want to die
Go and get Sputnic-V from Putin
Vacillating india jati ka sarso 🙏
Ram
The USA invests heavily in medical science and the world reaps the benefits. It’s time to put the US first.
Whoever invents it should get it first
