Nearly 20 years ago, Julie Dalton attempted to open a bottle of red wine and broke the cork in front of six diners, including one of her future bosses, the billionaire and Landry’s CEO Tilman Fertitta. Now, she is one of the best sommeliers in the world.

“The new leadership of the organization has made some monumental changes that needed to happen, and I’m happy with the direction it’s going,” said Dalton. “I had given up too much and sacrificed too much in this journey to walk away from it.”Before Dalton dedicated herself to her wine studies, she worked for years in biotech after graduating from Texas A&M.

While at Ranazul, her friend’s tapas-style restaurant located in a strip mall between Baltimore and Washington, D.C., she embarked on her wine studies. Dalton passed the first two levels within months. After a stint selling wine in New York, which Dalton said she hated, she moved back to Maryland and took a job at the Four Seasons, where the acclaimed chef Michael Mina ran a restaurant.

While honing her wine knowledge in Houston, Dalton kept taking the fourth-level exams every year to earn her master sommelier title even though she hadn’t passed since her first attempt in 2012
