At the time, the move to shut down the reality show seemed savvy and self-protective — reality had gotten a bit too real.
The lure of the camera’s validation, a tug felt not simply by 36 cheerleaders but generations of girls in the age of Instagram and TikTok, comes with the fangs of anonymous scorn. Too skinny, too fat. Too emotional, too bland. She’s a try-hard, no wait, she let herself go. The impossible game of hoping to be what everyone else wants is an intriguing throughline of. To strive for perfection is both relatable female passage and unwinnable war.
I have, actually, though only for an afternoon. The real backstage drama as experienced by Finglass is a series I would definitely watch, and a book I would definitely read, though I doubt we’ll ever get it. Still I was pleased to see the woman onscreen, who was polished but unknowable on, came across exactly as the woman had in real life. Strong and exacting but also funny and charming.
