Lest anyone wonder why elite athletes like Team USA gymnast Simone Biles feel insurmountable pressure to perform, they need look no further than what happened to American Alpine skier Mikaela Shiffrin in Beijing this week.
On Monday, she crashed 11 seconds into the giant slalom, where she was defending her Gold medal. On Wednesday, she skied out of the fifth gate in the slalom just five seconds into the race. Praise and support for her poured in on Wednesday, with Simone Biles, who had taken herself out of the Tokyo Summer Games over her own mental health concerns, tagging her in a tweet featuring a row of hearts.
There was nothing brutal about NBC’s coverage. No one shoved a camera in her face as she recovered. The interview - which she presumably did willingly - was respectful. She’s one of the greatest skiers ever so when she doesn’t perform up to her own high standards it’s newsworthy.
Um… like they should pretend she didn’t sat on snow for a while? Just pan the camera 🎥 the other way 🙄🙄
I also think witnessing the horrific crash of her teammate probably had a huge impact on her as well. I just wanted to reach through my TV and wrap my arms around her during that horrific interview they did with her last night
