The shooting happened when a sheriff’s deputy responded to Fortson’s apartment complex for a disturbance call. Body camera video shows Fortson answer the door with a gun in his hand, but he never raises it. The officer shot Fortson several times saying he felt threatened by the gun. The shooting gained national attention and local NAACP leaders hope it will lead to change.
OCSO fired deputy Eddie Duran four weeks after the deadly shooting, saying Duran shouldn’t have fired his weapon. Something the NAACP says is a step in the right direction. Now they say the next step is to bring the community together with Fortson’s family for a town hall meeting.
