Under the bill, schools are required to adopt policies that allow students to be absent up to three days each academic year to take holidays for reasons of faith or conscience or to participate in activities of a religious organization.

The sponsors are Reps. Gary Click, a Sandusky County Republican who is a Baptist pastor, and Jessica Miranda, a Cincinnati-area Democrat.

Students must notify instructors no later than 14 days after the course’s first day a written notice of specific dates for which they need alternative accommodations. Instructors must accept the students’ religious absences: “An instructor shall accept without question the sincerity of a student’s religious belief. An instructor shall keep requests for alternative accommodations confidential. An instructor shall schedule a time and date for an alternative examination, which may be before or after the time and date the examination or other academic requirement was originally scheduled, but shall do so without prejudicial effect.
