Ohio is tightening control on nine synthetic opioids that officials say are becoming more prevalent in overdoses around the state.

Gov. Mike DeWine signed an executive order Tuesday that authorizes the state Board of Pharmacy to place nine opioids—known as nitazenes—on the schedule I controlled substance list.

According to a 2022 warning from the Ohio Attorney General's Office, these drugs, depending on the formulation, can be up to 40 times stronger than fentanyl. “These are extremely dangerous substances being designed by clandestine chemists in an attempt to skirt the law while keeping them highly addictive,” said Gov. DeWine. “My administration is doing everything in our power to rapidly detect and schedule these types of compounds to ensure that law enforcement has the tools they need to prosecute those who make and sell these potentially lethal substances to the fullest extent of the law.
