Joking or not, the remark was typical of Biden’s tough-guy approach to a president he’s consistently cast as a high school bully. Where most of the top-tier Democratic candidates have tacked pretty closely to“When they go low, we go high,” not running from fights with Trump per se, but preferring to discuss their vision for countering his policies and the systemic problems that preceded him, Biden has taken a modified approach.
It’s a seemingly contradictory stance, and one that could become trickier to stick to as Trump inevitably zeroes in on his Democratic opponents. Biden’s choice to highlight the damage Trump has done to American democracy could conceivably appeal to more moderate voters weary of the president’s daily outrages. The idea of a fighter could likewise be appealing to Democrats. But it’s not even not clear that Biden would be the best counter-puncher among the field,during the first Democratic debate.
