Funerals can be comforting and unifying for family members. They can also be hotbeds for the airing of old grudges and long-untold family secrets. All of the above occurs when the Jenkins and Mabry families come together to mourn their patriarch in Douglas Lyons' Black family comedy 'Chicken & Biscuits,' which Oceanside Theatre Company is presenting in its California premiere. The play opened Saturday at the Brooks Theater in downtown Oceanside.
And arriving from Atlanta is Baneatta's self-adoring younger sister Beverly, who brings along her teen daughter La'Trice, an aspiring rapper. Tensions flare between the long-estranged Baneatta and Beverly, and Baneatta's cold rejection of her son's gay relationship is potent. But once the high-energy and wacky funeral service gets under way, the family begins to draw strength in unity and many touching, conciliatory speeches are made.
