A person died at the scene of a two-vehicle collision Sunday in Interstate 80 lanes just west of the Oakland-San Francisco Bay Bridge toll plaza, authorities said.

Just before 9 p.m., California Highway Patrol officers received word of a collision in eastbound I-80 lanes involving a small sedan that veered off the right-hand side before overturning and a second vehicle found sideways in the slow or right-most lane, CHP Officer James Evans said.

Despite emergency life-saving measures, the person was pronounced dead at the scene at 9:12 p.m. Their identity was not immediately available from the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office coroner’s bureau, pending next-of-kin notification. The CHP issued a Sig-alert and blocked off the Nos. 3, 4 and 5 lanes to traffic to allow for an investigation into the incident, and were working to recover possible footage of the collision from nearby surveillance cameras. The roadway’s right-hand lanes remained closed as of 10:10 p.m. with no estimated time of reopening.
