The wall of Brooklyn's 71st precinct featuring the "hunting of man" Hemingway quoteAn Ernest Hemingway quote that celebrates the “hunting of man” is plastered on the wall of a Brooklyn police precinct house, according to a photo obtained by Gothamist — and the NYPD is dismissing calls by local officials and advocates to remove it.
The NYPD is defending the quote as literary inspiration that captures the “exhilarating” nature of hunting dangerous criminals. But a local Council member and criminal justice advocates say the quote glorifies violence against their community.within the NYPD — a reincarnation of similar units that were disbanded in the wake of the George Floyd protests after earning a reputation for police abuse and violence.
Deputy Commissioner John Miller, who currently heads the NYPD’s communications office, told Gothamist that criticism of the quote was a disservice both to the dangerous work of police officers and the famed American author.
Then they wonder why they are the most hated group!! Trust no cop no where and at no time!!
Yawwwwwwwnnnnnnnnnnnn
*Armed men* aka predators hunting prey.
In America, a policeman's badge is a license to kill. On average, the US police kill someone every eight hours or about a thousand every year.
Stop. The is quote does not celebrate the hunting of man at all. It means anyone who enjoys hunting man has lost their humanity. Read a book.
So I guess the local officials are not into Hemingway?
How often does the NYPDnews NYPDPC respond to the community's pain & trauma? If the poem is triggering to community members, why not remove it?
There is no fixing this culture with the current system.
It should stay. That’s what police do, they hunt criminals and bring them to Justice. People are too sensitive these days.
Last week one of their soccer players was screaming uncontrollably while walking off the field “I will murder you,” after a 3-0 defeat on Randall’s Island. They play in the CosmoLeague.
Gothamist is okay with crystalrhudson asserting the false claim that “policing started as an intentional attempt to violently ‘hunt’ Black people while quelling opposition and rebellion”? That’s just propaganda. Law enforcement existed in antiquity.
I don’t think the quote means what Dep Commish John Miller thinks it does.
