After five years of investigations and protests, the NYPD on Monday fired an officer involved in the chokehold death of Eric Garner. The unarmed black man's dying gasps of 'I can't breathe' gave voice to a national debate over race and police use of force.

Police Commissioner James P. O'Neill makes an announcement at New York City Police Dept. headquarters, Monday, Aug. 19, 2019. After five years of investigations and protests, the New York City Police Department fired an officer involved in the 2014 chokehold death of Eric Garner, whose dying cries of "I can't breathe" fueled a national debate over race and police use of force.

“The job is dead!” Patrolman’s Benevolent Association President Patrick Lynch said at a news conference, standing in front of a police department flag hung upside down. Mayor Bill De Blasio, speaking at City Hall, said he hoped the decision would let the city, the department and Garner’s family move forward.

The footage showed Garner, 43, and Pantaleo lurching against a glass storefront window and then falling to the pavement. Quickly, Garner, who weighed about 400 pounds , appeared distressed gasping, “I can’t breathe,” at least 11 times before he fell unconscious. Then, a few days before Christmas, a man upset about the Garner and Brown cases fatally shot two New York City police officers as they sat in their cruiser in Brooklyn.

Garner died of a heart attack two hours later.

Sue this cities for big $ they waste tax payers $ anyway

America is truly a baffling place. Kill someone and only lose your job.

How about his black female supervisor. Hello!

Got away with murder

Charge him with murder...

Five years? Jeeez

robintallfish He should be indicted.

slaponthewrist

Sadly he died because of pre existing health issues but that never gets mentioned

He'll will get his job back and full back pay and restitution... pretty chicken shit of the police commissioner but what do u expect out of NY

Had nothing to do with race and everything to do with abuse of force. There plenty of cases of people who died of compression asphyxia by the police.

Hopefully he gets more money from the lawsuit than the gold diggers aka the Garners received. I wonder if Mr. Garner is smiling while looking up from his final destination. obesitykills criminal fatty

Pug

FINALLY!! It took long enough!!!

Fired instead of prosecuted? 🤦🏾‍♂️ He'll go work at another department.

Now for the Civil Court to serve up some justice.

I think you meant “The Officer who choked Eric Garner to death”.

Could care less

Technically, if you can say something you can’t be choking.

'an officer involved in the chokehold death of Eric Garner' is an interesting way of saying 'the officer who killed Eric Garner by strangling him.'

Your choices are :

But he isn't HAHAHAHAHA

The best line in the press conf., maybe he shouldnt have resisted and complied w/ the officier! Why is it ok to defy an officer? Why is the WHOLE STORY told and looked into. Why was Mr. Garner approached by police? ITS DISGUSTING U AND THE REST OF FASCIST MEDIA R SO CORRUPT

he loses his job while a family loses its father. American justice at its finest.

Finally. Thank you Kaepernick7 for your sacrifice and for making people start to pay attention.

I seriously don't get the union outrage over this. Even if you believe the death was accidental & the officer didn't intend to kill him...he still used a tactic that the NYPD banned decades ago & a man died because of it. In what world should this guy be allowed to be an officer?

Rest in Power Eric, aluta continua.

Fired, good. And a murder trial?

It only took five years for justice to be served? .... sooooo the system doesn’t work? Does it?

Daniel Pantaleo is a murderer and should be in jail.
