New York City and New Jersey will increase indoor dining capacity from 35% to 50% starting March 19

The B.1.1.7 variant was found in 12% of cases, up from eight percent last week, while the B.1526 variant was found in 39% of cases, as compared with 30% the week before; the city did not detect cases of the variants first detected in South Africa and Brazil. Dr. Jay Varma, the city’s senior advisor for public health, said preliminary analysis of the B.1526 variant suggested while it is more infectious, right now there’s no indication that “it causes more severe illness or reduces the effectiveness of vaccines,” despite public health officials previouslyreleased Wednesday found that strain—which is also more transmissible—may be up to 100% more deadly than previous dominant variants of the virus.
