Results from the New York City Council races are expected to begin trickling in after polls close at 9 p.m. on Tuesday, along with tallies from the Queens district attorney race, judicial contests and a pair of statewide ballot proposals.
This year marks a once-every-20-year quirk in New York City’s election calendar, when all City Council districts are up for an abbreviated, off-cycle, two-year term to account for new district maps redrawn last year to include the latest U.S. Census data. This year’s election is the first with the newly drawn maps.
“Every age, every background, everyone has come out to vote — and it is an important race,” said Barbara Ballinger, a poll worker who arrived at the location at 5 a.m. “If I care about this city and what’s going on, then I have to do my part and vote,” she said. “That’s the least I can do.”
