NY nursing home reports 98 deaths linked to coronavirus

The Isabella Geriatric Center is shown Friday, May 1, 2020, in New York. The nursing home says nearly 100 of its residents have died from confirmed or suspected cases the novel coronavirus. It is among the hardest hit nursing homes in the state, with 46 confirmed fatalities and an additional 52 deaths of people suspected to have the virus.

But officials at the 705-bed center confirmed that through Wednesday 46 residents who tested positive for COVID-19 had died as well as an additional 52 people “suspected” to have the virus. Some died at the nursing home and some died after being treated at hospitals. Isabella also encountered staffing shortages, prompting it to hire from outside agencies and early challenges securing personal protective equipment for employees. Waters said the home finally is “getting more access to testing” now.Nursing homes have been known since the earliest days of the outbreak as a trouble spot.

City officials are"trying to provide help in every way we can,” the mayor added, saying the city had delivered thousands of respirator masks to the Washington Heights facility.

Nursing home residents are poor. They get the virus from their workers. Maybe from their family members visiting them. Friends!! If testing is available to those entering Nursing Homes, the elderly's lives could have saved. TESTING is necessary to stop the spread of the virus.

Please expose the truth! My family's nursing home was ordered by the state of New York to accept covid patients released from the hospital to convalesce. 0 Covid cases and right lockdown before. 50+ deaths after. This is outrage is NYGovCuomo's fault.

Then that is THEIR fault. I work in a high rise nursing home and we have not had one single person test positive. We take precautions. 200 patients. No positive tests!

Failure of the governor & mayor of NY to take the warnings seriously, down playing the risk. Failed to have a plan & adequate PPE's for this kind of crisis. PPE's were depleted in 2014 & not replenished. As a result, not enough PPE's & medical facilities & 1st responders came 1st
