The World Health Organization is due to meet to discuss the rise of a highly mutated COVID variant, which has been dubbed 'Nu.'

These names, assigned by scientific organizations such as GISAID, Nextstrain and Pango, convey important information, so are still used in research. Scientists use the Greek names too, however, especially when communicating with the public.

The use of geographical names even discouraged some nations from running tests for emerging variants to avoid the risk of stigmatization,Tulio de Oliveira, a bioinformatician and director of the KwaZulu-Natal Research Innovation and Sequencing Platform in Durban, South Africa, told the magazine in June:"The geographical names, we have to stop with that—really."

Before deciding to use the Greek alphabet, the WHO consulted experts who work on existing naming systems, as well as virus taxonomic experts, researchers and national authorities.

Nice way to skip Xi

Nu must be kidding me! I thought Zulu be a better name for the South African variant..

false

Only strongest strains survive vaccination and become dominant. That's why nobody and never performed vaccination in the midst of epidemic outbreak.

If they’re naming the new variant “Nu” because it’s the next letter in the Greek alphabet, that means there’s been 12 variants of covid before this one? Or do they not know the order of the Greek alphabet?

It's all nonsense.

all i wanted for 2022 was to not see another eric feigl-ding tweet.... fork

The number of infections is doubling every 11 days in France but officials said there was no need to follow Austria's example of reimposing a lockdown. Health Minister Olivier Veran said anyone aged 18 or over would be eligible for booster shots and that the period between full vaccination and the booster jabs would be shortened to five months from six.
