The resignation of a longtime National Public Radio editor who wrote an essay accusing his employer of having a liberal bias in its coverage has renewed calls from congressional Republicans to take away funding provided by the federal government .
Berliner was suspended for violating the organization’s rules about outside work without permission, further adding to the backlash from Republicans in Congress and other personalities online and in media. The controversy culminated when he resigned earlier this week, taking shots at NPR’s chief executive Katherine Maher in a letter he also“I respect the integrity of my colleagues and wish for NPR to thrive and do important journalism,” he wrote in the letter.
Former President Donald Trump, who holds significant sway over congressional Republicans as the party’s presidential nominee, also called for defunding NPR.Any bill that passed the House would be certain to fail in the Democratic Senate and would be opposed by President Joe Biden.NPR has dealt with accusations of a partisan tilt for years and has sometimes faced efforts from Republicans in Congress pushing to “defund” the outlet.
While NPR receives little direct government funding for its newsrooms, it does receive money indirectly from local public stations that use taxpayer funds through the Corporation for Public Broadcasting to air some of its programming on their airwaves.
