I thought that domestic and international law states that a person under the age of 18 is considered a juvenile. Guess the seriousness of the offense committed plays a part.

And there’s also pushes to lower the voting age to 16, so no. Judicial/ grand jury discretion is fine. Most of these cases are horribly violent acts that we expect people to know not to do once they’re old enough to actually do them.

Sometimes 15 year olds commit adult crimes. However, mental illness should be always considered.

They should try him as sane as well. Mental illness is far too common to be used as an excuse to avoid trial.

I hope he gets life in prison and I hope his parents get time in prison too for providing him guns his whole life and not locking them up properly and for not being good parents.

So now he's the victim? Slurp down that kool-aid 🥴🥴🥴

We need to normalize and fund mental health supports in communities and schools.

Very strange justice system, either you have fully grown brains and you are an adult or you are a child that should be punished differently. The revenge justice does not help kids, it makes them career criminals.

He thinks he was bullied in school , he is in for a big surprise. I don't have a big opinion on guns because because gun control will only influence law abiding , if some wants a gun they can find it, but we have got to start treating each other better and that starts with leader

Why have a distinction in the law, when it comes to age, when it can be arbitrarily thrown away when desired? If you're for charging anyone underage as an adult, you should be for removing the age distinction in the law as a whole

People who say he shouldn't be tried like an adult, should be given chance to heal.. you guys surely are saints.. I hope u live these words in your daily life.. forgiving everyone around and very compassionate to family colleagues, friends strangers on the road..

And we are tired of being attacked and killed by 'children'. Who are you with NPR, the victims or the murderers? A murder is a murder. Doesn't really matter who perpetrates it. Whoever did it should be behind bars for a very long time.

It’s safe to give opinions from the comfort of your laptop.

And almost none of them are upper-middle-class white conservatives who get sympathetic profiles on NPR.

50,000 juveniles /year is a large number of children being accused of heinous, outrageous crimes. Or at least, shouldn’t that be the standard? Particularly when a rapist of 4 young women is released bc the judge believed that incarceration would be ‘inappropriate’.

And in this case I believe it’s right to charge him as an adult

Good. If they are old enough to know better, they are old enough to be tried as an adult

*Minors. Thousands of minors are tried as adults each year. No children are. 🙄

Perhaps they will scapegoat him, but he's a product of his culture, his actions were in alignment with his family's and culture's mores. It would be his fault if people had actively been teaching him the opposite.

Charging a 15-year-old as an adult was a mistake. At the very least, the Oakland Co. prosecutor should have waited until the investigation was complete.

As heinous as this violent crime was, has the accused been examined by at least two clinicians? Has a brain scan been performed to determine cognitive ability, maturation? You'd think these would be part of the process besides the knee-jerk political grandstanding we've seen...

US Criminal Justice System needs to have something between 'Juvenile' and 'Adult' - 3 options vs 2. 'The rational part of a teen's brain isn't fully developed & won't be until age 25 or so. In fact, recent research has found that adult & teen brains work differently.' meena

Children should NEVER be treated as adults. Ever.

if you think you’re adult enough to carry a gun and pull that trigger with intent.. then you should be tried as an adult and hopefully rot in in jail.

This is certainly one case where it is absolutely ok to charge as an adult
