'I know it's tough for some people to consider that a character they have loved for years, even decades, might also be the embodiment of something pernicious as white privilege,' NPR's Eric Deggans says.

Seinfeld, Chappelle, Bond – to NPR’s Eric Deggans, everything is problematic and tainted by white privilege.

Eric Deggins really needs to change careers.

I've seen two bond movies, two different bonds. I do not really get the hype, but I don't have a penis. Is it even really white privilege or is it penis privilege?

Great article.

BREAKING NEWS : posts an opinion piece related to entertainment; many internet goers to lose their minds. 'How can NPR post this piece at a time like this?' -woman thinking they should post on a topic already reported extensively. 'UNFOLLOWED' - man with dissenting opinion

Not even gonna read this crap. Everyone knows James Bond has been a sexist dinosaur. Where’s the news? Damn, do some real reporting. No one’s looking to James Bond fir social commentary. There so many serious issues we have deal with and you choose this.

Nope. Just nope to this.

Can we not

Pernicious? As in the pernicious effects of the mass media, such as NPR?

Give it up.

NPR used to be good once upon a time.

More like coming to terms with a defunct cinematic trope from the 60s

Are we talking US White Privilege or UK White Privilege

I would rather watch the cheesiest 70s Bond movie, with an elderly Roger Moore slapping the butt of a girl half his age, than endure the endless sanctimony and patronizing tones of listening to an hour of NPR.

Bond films are anti white privilege. That is why albinos are always a villain.

Hey, for everyone commenting who are so triggered they can’t bring themselves to read the article, it is NOT about canceling it, FFS, it’s about how it CAN fo forward in 2021’s world. But great job proving your fragility and fingers-in-ears ignorance is actually alive and well.

Although I think Daniel Craig is the best Bond since Sean Connery, I’ve always thought Idris Elba should be James Bond since he came on the scene. Not because he’s Black, but because he’s good.

It’s pulp fiction not high literature.

Oh ffs.

When all you have is a hammer, the whole world is a nail.

The Bond setting was normal life and demographics for Ian Flemming and decades of producers. You want to find non-white priviledge? Go write your own stories. If people find them interesting, and, er, mark me down as skeptical, you can have your own franchise with no flaws.

OMG..wokealert

NPR must make it a habit to hire miserable “journalists.” Relax and enjoy life a little Eric.

I am not sure what is accomplished by sitting in judgement of a fictional character. Bond has always been a fantasy of sorts. Shall we condemn Macbeth for killing the king? Macbeth was so mean!!!!! Hamlet was so whiney. What next?

THE COVID VACCINES CAUSE FAR GREATER SEQUELAE THAN THE CORONAVIRUS ITSELF. CRIME AGAINST HUMANITY!

Oh god.

what a libtarded thing to say about a movie character~

NPR really 007 movies have had every race of human being on the planet. Long before most others even though of it. Pick a better target to spread your hatred and disconnect!! overit

This is ridiculous

1/ Sounds like you need to stop watching Bond. Bond has always been, and will always be, a white male working class fantasy. He's the white guy who gets everything the average white guy doesn't: cool cars, gadgets, women, and saves the day.

So a british spy being white is crazy? A country that is 86% white people?

🙄

Jesus Christ on the cross who gives a shit. Literally nobody is thinking that.

Worshiping dynastic wealth & power is what it is all about; worshiping aristocrats, princes, princesses, kings,... worshiping white colonial privilege like gods.

If he was privileged they would have got him a helicopter

I mean we listen to R Kelly M. Jackson and go to Catholic Church

This may come as a surprise, NPR you are exploiting real life problems for journalistic profit. No matter what color , or who voted for who..we have all had a rough fucking year and just want to watch a got damn Bond movie to get our minds off of real world bulshit!

It's always been this way for a fellow born in 1908, educated at Eton and Sandhurst and who worked for Naval Intelligence in WWII.

Yes we need our spy assassins to be woke. That’s exactly what we need. Yep. Socially conscious spy assassins. Box office magic I tells ya!

Wow alot of folks seem really invested in the Bond character. I've been around for pretty much all the Bond movies and I love spy thrillers.Even as a kid I didn't like the Bond character because he was so stinking sexist.

If NPR abandoned these 'racial America' hot takes, I dare say they might not have any programming at all.

And a gross male chauvinist pig. When I watch old Bond movies, I cringe at the character’s casually kissing and touching women before they said yes

What dumb take. Find better writers with something worthwhile to say FFS.

Wow. The clout that online writers are trying to gain with this movie is amazing.

Awww, go pound sand, Eric! Maybe the social justice movement would make more progress if it focused on real things instead of movie characters and pancake syrup!

Courage...

Oh for fuck's sake. He's a fictional character. I'm liberal myself. But it occurs to me that maybe we could do some actual work instead of running around with our panties in a wad about movies adaptations of 60 year old books.

Great example of why republicans win elections.

NPR Cookie Consent and ChoicesBishopNaomi Our school district is not following that guidance. My kid (who is only unvaccinated because he’s too young) was a “close contact” and they put him on “modified quarantine,” which is just testing 2x/week. The anti-vax and anti-mask crowd aren't helping kids learn since switching from remote/in-class/remote/in-class... is worse than just going remote. Moreover, kids are being hospitalized in FL at a very high rate - jeopardizing many kids' lives and futures with LongCovid. We need a federally funded online/virtual option asap + Schools need some of the home tests potus purchased this week + We need the federal government to ship better masks (n/kn95’s or kn94’s) to everyone in a K-12 building + HEPA air filters in all classes
