PG&E will spend as much as $30 billion to bury 10,000 miles of power lines in an effort to prevent its grid from sparking wildfires when electrical equipment collides with vegetation in drought-stricken California.

That come down to $3M/mile, or ~$600/ft, why so expensive? elonmusk, does your Boring company have a smaller machine to drill mini tunnels, and another to deploy power lines? I guess this could cut the cost by 10x w/o digging and burying.

And so begins the Gopher Wars…

It would be cheaper to just repair the existing lines. This is a form of subsidized fraud that benefits the political parties. This is happening in many public utility industries, like telecom. They must always find new ways to spend the consumer's money.

While underground utilities do prevent wildfires and many smaller outages, the ideal lifespan of either option is about same, at around 40-50yrs. The major difference is that if there is an issue causing an outage, it is a lot easier for us to find the cause when it is overhead.

Finally some forward thinking!

It was about time!!

In 2008 or 9 my city (in Iowa) had a wind storm that took a lot of lines down. So the utility company made the call to put cable, power, internet etc all underground and since then we've lost power maybe twice. Our utility company is publicly owned which is why it got done.

PG&E will spend it, but the customers will pay for it.

FINALLY

This needs to be done around the entire country. Think of the jobs it can create and sustain. No more lines down because of ice and wind (my power was just out for 14 hours because of tree limbs broken by a storm).

Better late than never. PG&E routinely failed to keep their lines clear of brush, resulting in devastating CA fires when they (inevitably) sparked. The ClimateEmergency probably requires that most power lines in wildfire zones be buried. We can no longer afford not to.
