A new analysis finds that in only 218 of more than 3,000 counties in the U.S. can a full-time, minimum-wage earner afford a 1-bedroom rental home at fair market rent without dipping into other income.

Rent is out of whack. Completely agree

Breaking news 'minimum' wage can't afford to be 'middle' class, who knew?

“We must ever bear in mind that our objective is to improve and not to impair the standard of living of those who are now undernourished, poorly clad and ill-housed.”

My Heartily congratulations N Balasubramanisn senior journalst cow Blessings channels tv president Sri baalaji Foundation Chennai India

A new analysis? SHOCKING! Umm, this is not new nor do to inflation…This has been going on for decades. Shameful. Old News. Try living in CT.

I was told the other day from a potential landlord that they wanted both me & my partner to make 3x the income each not combined. After I clarified, I told her she was out of her mind. That would mean 15K/month between both of us. The rental was $2500 for a rundown 3 bed.

When I was living in WA just outside of Seattle was paying 3k a month for 2 bdrm. Had to work overtime, weekends, and holidays to cover it. Was barely home and didn't have family time or a social life anymore.

Now add in health insurance costs

A Real FUCK YOU to any renting Americans rn.

To afford a one bedroom apartment, a person needs to make at least $15 an hour at 40 hours. Not many places are paying that or guaranteeing the hours. People fail to consider too that the poorer a person is, the higher the ACA monthly. Add car, utilities, food, clothes.

Man it’s a good thing that less than 3% of all hourly wage employees make minimum wage then.

Oh another article stirring the pot on this. New agenda of the day for you NPR. Min wage is not designed to live on your own and everyone knows it. Same people complaining about min wage will be complaining about paying $10 for a Big Mac trying to pay those employees.

'...other income.' Mom and Dad, Grandma and Grandpa. The leadership of this country has been bought by Wall Street. I don't know anyone who doesn't supplement their working adult children in some way. Paying for phone, car repair, insurance, medical bills, etc.

end the fed

Duh

Especially when they have to earn 3x the cost of rent per month even to apply. It's not a living wage; it's servitude without the perks of boarding and sustenance.

Tax the Rich. Socialize medical care, housing and education from childcare to university. Start investing in people.

Breaking news, stating the obvious for the past 50 years.

Most rent is out of reach if you make 3x minimum wage

Being an “average worker”, on a single minimum income, with services to be purchased, housing, medical care, food, & transportation, is unsustainable. This has changed over the past 50+ years. A new social compact with responsibility, portable benefits and training is critical.

No.......it takes at least two separate incomes.

Anyone working 40 hrs a week deserves to not live on the street. Wild idea, I know! Corporate boot-lickers, reply here 👇🏼 (Looking forward to reading angry comments about paying more for fast food)

This is why housing can't be an investment strategy. We need a rethink.

No fucking kidding

Relying on a single minimum wage earner to run a household was never the point of minimum wage.

What other income? You mean, the second job or the credit card debt?
