How important is impartiality for journalists? And which readers does it serve? Those questions are at the center of a fight over whether a decorated New York Times reporter should get a tenured position at the University of North Carolina.

Or Perhaps UNC should stop accepting $ from wealthy racists.

Her work was littered with inaccuracies and falsehoods = no tenure.

Well, she made up a bunch of stuff. That’s still bad, right NPR?

Wow this is so poorly written, it portrays him as the objectivist, when it was his offense at her objectivity that led to him demanding she not be given tenure.... how did this central premise escape you?

Ethiopian Tigray case is a good example to show how the international media including NYT is so partial and biased in reporting the fact on the ground. Thier perspective towards African countries especially is flawed.

Impartially in journalism, if it ever existed, died with Hearst & Pulitzer. It’s been partial ever since.

Here's the real issue. How much should donors be allowed to interfere in the operations of the organizations they give to? FYI, Walter Hussman isn't the only rich asshole that extorts his gift recipients into submitting to his personal agenda.

'But Hannah-Jones says there has never been true impartiality in American journalism.' As evidenced by the fact that you are trying to 'both sides' a situation in which a DONOR is influencing TENURE DECISIONS at a PUBLIC UNIVERSITY. Not to even mention his rationale is bananas.

Story misses the point. Concern over “objectivity” is a smoke screen. His only specific objection is to the 1619 Project. He can’t handle the truth.

A lot

Hussman's paper ran an article on 10/3/1919 about the Elaine massacre, listing by name and occupation the five white men who died. The many Black men that were killed in the massacre were left unnamed. Is this Hussman's version of 'impartial?'

And this coward trying to silence her not only gave her a bigger audience, but also told on himself.

Y’all crackers are crazy with these responses

Calling her a journalist is an insult to objective professionals in that industry. She’s a grifter that makes her living on propaganda and divisive misinformation.

Since when has Hannah-Jones or The NY Times been considered impartial?

They are both right and wrong. True objectivity is something that should be strived for and sounds cold if put in a paper. Caring is important, but there isn't enough paper to care from all the possible angles to not unduly bias the reporting. This is the problem to overcome.

This article does a pretty good job of laying out why she shouldn't get tenure.

I’m pretty sure this is bogus framing. Did prof produce scholarship, teaching, service commensurate with historical standards of tenure at institution and does record meet standards at equivalent institutions.

Yikes. I think we can all agree that anyone from the NYT should be banned from teaching at any University.

Of course impartiality is paramount, otherwise people like me wouldn't read bulwarks of truth like the NYT. Anti-racism and inclusivity are the only truths! I know they are telling the truth because as a liberal I am too smart to believe lies. I have a degree!

Lol of course it has to be about skin color to NPR and not the endless inaccuracies of 1619... The quality of the idea is paramount to the identity of the thinker. If you don't believe that, you're a racist.

Why is 'impartial' synonymous with 'white supremacist'?
