After 50 years, there's a growing consensus that America's 'war on drugs' just didn't work. Now, the U.S. is rethinking those policies that led to mass incarceration and shattered families — while drug deaths continued to rise.

From the article: 'They were utterly failing to take into account diversion,' said West Virginia Republican Attorney General Patrick Morrisey. Interesting comment. God forbid we would ever make the exact same observation regarding legal gun purchases.

Big $$$ behind opioid crisis. It’s a transfer of wealth from the opioid market to substance use disorder meds by labeling all chronic pain pts addicts & replacing meds patient, harms notwithstanding RepKatiePorter tedlieu vanitaguptaCR RBReich gordondeb RobinsueF hrw

Yes, after 40 years of failing you covered it:

I think there was a consensus long ago. You probably covered it.

War on immigrants hasn’t worked.

Ughhh I can’t even rn. Don’t make me think of all the bs the US govt did 🤬

Huge drug users=rich-gov-police-fire-medical workers &push sales 2youth. gov in charge makin huge$ on drugs inUS.They steal from homes. Got new EBT card sinceCA UI halt payments 4mos now no contact-been eatin from garbage cans.GroceryShopped-newam police/fire camein stole food.

The war was never on drugs. Call it for what it really is. The war was of white supremacist against black and brown people. If the war was really on drugs, half the white thrash and white celebrities in this country would be in jail. Can you see the ratio?

The war on drugs was never serious. Go after the source.

Prohibition kills. SafeSupply

Also chronic pain patients living in agony or committing suicide. Please see PROP, a gaggle of zealots responsible for cruel & crankish limitations on pain treatment.

Decriminalize drugs Release everyone incarcerated Erase convictions Implement Medicare for All Build free hospitals & rehabs Provide drug purity tests, Narcan & supervised consumption sites Allow people to exchange their drugs for the prescription equivalent De facto legalization

Not to get off topic, but …. same thing goes with the “trickle-down” theory.

Maybe the US should try regime change. Overthrow the govt of drugs and install their own puppet.

Drug deaths are related to the reasons people use drugs: they feel awful and want to feel better. We need to make life less awful. We need a society and an economy that lifts us up instead of tearing us down.

War on drugs was just a way to incarcerate minorities and disenfranchise them.

It worked for me. I don’t do drugs. Enjoying a drug free life here.

War? They replaced cocaine with Pharma. War. Smdh. What a joke.

Where can we point to what has worked ?

AtheistBlkChic The war on drugs worked the way they wanted it to. It filled the prisons with 100s of thousands of black men that had no business being there. That was the whole intent.

Nothing....end it!

'War' on drug fails, 'war' on terror fails... if you treat (label) a problem as a 'war,' but the nature of the problem is not military (or solvable using military/like solutions), you fail.

No shit. It is a war on personal freedom, not drugs.

America needs to rethink our policies of “war”. The term “war” is used as some legitimate solution in solving problems with war being the solution, well we have been losing our wars since the 60s. The war on Drugs? Lost that one before we started it.

It was never about drugs nor saving people, but only about making money in the 'war on drugs'.

If the US weren't such a miserable place to live, Americans wouldn't self medicate so much to forget where they live.

Politicians knew it was (harmful) theater all along.

The War on Drugs was cowboys policy

The incarceration and deaths were the goal. It’s worked very well. Addiction is a growth industry

Mexico passed a law around 1930's to make drugs legal, but the US goverment pressured and threatened an 'intervention' if the laws werent abolished, so they changed the law, 20 years later the first cartel was formdd, and now we have a mess and you have a mess and nothing worked.

Duh.

Drug addiction must be treated as a disease, recreational use must be treated as an educational/regulatory deficiency. Murder, robbery, theft, those are crimes.

Now we wage wars on plastic straws, CO2, soda, fast food & natural human biology. Go USA!

This sounds like an abusive husband story.

war on illegal drugs....cause a TON of soccer moms are high as a kite on what their doctors prescribe them....

Avoided circumstances similar to the “Krokodile” reactions from recent history. It was reasonable to conclude.

Drug deaths are from ignorances and misinformed. I have data identifying the conditions in reality that drug use under fear based control had them ingesting no authentic substances and without reference to authentic. To save life I stepped in with authentic representations and

Oh well look at that...it only took 50 years 😑

the u.s. government is the biggest drug dealer

Palestine today!

Portugal figured this out 20 years ago, FYI. That is to say, for the last twenty years folks knew it didn’t work, but continued on anyway. What’s growing in consensus is whether we should *act* on what we know is wrong. Or call this delayed compassion. 🙄

Please help Palestine!

we can agree that drug dealers fight and kill for territory ?

I investigated the solution when trump put Me in for4 months. The more severe the impact they thought they had at the time is what they feel they owe. They will be imbalanced otherwise. But immediate changes to how they are housed. What we do with them to make their transitions

Americans always do the right thing after they exhaust all options.

We are in this together so restricting others is counter productive. We don’t need to be policed any more. We all get it

Just one more Conservative policy idea that did FAR more harm than good. Harm that will take *decades* to correct. Now wait for Climate change, no gun restrictions, no to gay rights, no legal abortions.... Has the Right had a single successful policy idea in the last 50-years?

Drugs everywhere should be decriminalized. Putting people behind bars should cease and the one in should finish out the agreement within reason.

Time to start studying up on what Portugal did.

War on drugs is a multi trillion dollar disaster here and abroad

it's a war for employment. the drug war gives the government a job, that includes cops.

America loves to punish. Sadism against the most vulnerable people America's specialty. The whole system is set up to ensure its racist national past time continues.

Amazing how we give constantly failing right wing policies half a century for them to fail...and more progressive policies get shot down in the chalkboard phase.

“Absolutely nothing! Say it again, y’all”

nice

let's allow people to shoot dope in public and shoplift $900 worth of merchandise

The last few days Biden is looking like he can't even hold a thought for more than 30 seconds.
