Experts say there are other services the Postal Service could be providing, such as selling hunting and fishing licenses, leasing parts of its buildings, or getting into banking.

I absolutely disagree that the USPS should be into banking.

Dems are in majority Close them down if the States have not shown improvement in their broadband infrastructure why fund? If Republicans want to push this issue and their voters agree. OK. Capt Save A Ho ain’t working today. I know Blue got this for their constituents.

or rise the prices

congress can also get rid of the Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act (PAEA) that forces it to fully fund employee retirement of 50 years in advanced, which no other organizations do ever because its crazy. the GOP, 'Dubbya' created this law in 2006 to crush the post office

'Fire Departments have been losing our country millions of dollars every year! Is it time they consider selling baked goods instead?' The USPS is a service, not a business. The fact that it has created a net profit for so many years is just an added bonus.

Banking is a great idea, already implemented in other countries.

It’s called the United States Postal SERVICE. As in a service for the American people. It’s not mandated to make a profit. Does the Army, CDC, NASA, IRS, Veterans Administration make a profit? do better.

📮 If Biden’s nominees for Board of Governors for the Post Office agree with these “experts,” then fine.

Why is the USPS expected to be a profit center? What other governmental agency or department produces income/profit?

Or selling newspapers? (something I've been repeatedly told is against the rules) However, I see Hallmark cards managed to get into the lobby.

Lack of imagination is only reason US politically punishes its beloved, internat’l top ranked postal service. They can consolidate VA, Social Security ops. They can get private banks to lease bldg. and help pay for postal ops. They could be mini-commissaries, partner with retail.

Really? Not my post office! There always a wait!!👎👎

wonder why we didn't do this in 2009? oh yea, the oligarchs from both sides of the aisle are one and the same

Who cares if a public service operates “in the red”? It’s providing a service to the public! That’s worth paying for. Jesus, we are so brain-poisoned in this damn country.

How about universal health care?

When the Pentagon is required to turn a profit, then the USPS should too. Until then, this is all BS to try to privatize. Lobbyists are destroying our postal service.

Why should we expect the post office to turn a profit? Does the public school system turn a profit? The military?

Or, ya know, they could reverse the law from a decade or so ago when the GOP decided to whore themselves out to the business privitization & make the Post Offices pay unwarranted amounts into pensions so their profit/loss margin looks artificially bad.

The federal government doesn't have hunting licenses, the states do. They already sell federal migratory bird stamps for hunting. And if current lines are any indication, they don't need more people there to do non postal related business.

Vonnie932 Check cashing services belong in local post office branches, and getting photo IDs for non-drivers.

Employees have been saying this...

Kayak and bike rentals. Go for it.

Because they do our mail so well.

Or, we could reduce mail service to once per week. I don’t need the usps to deliver to my door on a daily basis. It’s a waste of money, resources and bad for the environment. usps

They don't do what they're supposed to do very well and you want them to do more?

Have Congress remove the burden of prefunding pensions off USPS (that Congress imposed upon them in the 1st place) & the 'problem' is solved.

Wouldn't trust it with USPS Postmaster General Dejoy in charge of anything. 🤔 Guy is shady AF & acti Ely trying to destroy the USPS to give private carriers the opening to take over - and make everything worse & more expensive.

YES to postal banking!

It is a service not a business. Greed has you all ass backwards.

Ok, but it’s also the post office. It is a critical public service that should be subsidized.

It is an obsolete department and should just be done away with.

They could show more skin.

Stop weekend delivery?

It’s a service not a business!

How? Every time I go to one of several post offices near me, there is a line almost around the corner.

It’d be awesome if they offered those services, but why are we obsessed with making sure every post office location isn’t in the red? It’s a service, not a business.

Or maybe a common good service shouldn't be forced to operate like a business, and maybe have that GOP pension funding garbage tossed out.

They can’t even deliver things on time so maybe start there

THESE are the ones who should be getting government bailouts. Not the megamoney corporations.

The French Postal Service and others in Europe have or had banks. Also early telegraph and telephone services. Telecommunications were spun off in the 90' and the bank in 2006 keeping its core postal/shipping operations.

U.S. post office is a failed business at the taxpayer's expense, needs a complete overhaul.

Introducing banking into POs would also inject a level of white collar professionalism currently lacking in most POs

Maybe if some of the onerous burdens inflicted by republicans over the past years were removed, the P.O. could do what it does best--deliver the mail. I am perfectly pleased to have my tax dollars used to support this needed & venerable institution. (& DeJoy has GOT to go)

It’s in the red because the GOP required them to finance pensions 8,000 years in the future. Fed Ex, et al didn’t like the competition, and the GOP couldn’t eliminate a program mandated by the constitution, so...

Postal banking. Also, screw the folks who drag the USPS for operating at a loss. It's a ridiculous and inappropriate standard for judging a critical public service.

Stupid. FedEx, UPS, DHL are doing just fine in the mail business alone. Why did Congress allow carving profitable businesses from the Post Office? Has anyone been to a Post Office lately? They are barely capable of handling their existing business, let alone new businesses.

Post Office is a vital National good, not intended to operate in the black. UPS, FedEx, GHL, Prime (among others) are gobbling up the profitable market sectors. The post office is essential government that should go away once it operates in the black.

I like the idea they can sell licenses. But banking...?!? Doesn't seem like a good idea. That is straying a bit far from their purpose.

It’s a National Service! The military runs in the red. The Senate runs in the red. The House runs in the red. The Pentagon runs in the red. Fire departments run in the red!!! FFS 🤦‍♂️

“Experts say...” I don’t know how expert you need to be to say what was done decades ago could be done again today, but whatever.

another example of why the government should be in as little of our lives as possible. Amazon, UPS, Fedex, DHL are operating in the black.

I know in many countries, their postal offices offer banking and bill payment services. Decent rates on payroll processing, too. It could work if packaged well

maybe tie a couple brooms to the backs of trucks and use them as street sweepers

Banking would be a really smart move.

The post offices are in the red because Congress confiscates all their profits into general revenue.

The postal service is in the Constitution. It is meant to service everyone. And until Bush, that was understood. The bs put upon them beyond what other businesses provide, is funding retirement, has been a sit and switch.

Let's just start with them getting back to delivering November mailed Christmas cards before March first, mmKay? BabySteps USPS

Voter registrations, taking utility payments,; no matter what, hire enough people to take care of the volume of any service provided. Currently (before Covid) the lines were out the door on a normal Saturday, much less near the holidays! And fire DeJoy! cc USPS

Postal Service, not postal business

Those experts sound like USPS union representatives. That is a joke. Let's deal with reality...we no longer need the USPS in its current structure.

The Military also operates in the red....all of it.

They could stop demanding they fund their pension plan into infinity just so it fails and private corporations can cannibalize it’s parts as DeJoy was trying to do!

YES! Esp banking.

Some women have a difficult time working for the postal service because it’s so mail-dominated.

They often fall behind with the duties they have and this clown says they should have MORE?!

The Postal Service is not a business, it's a public service.

Yes. It would be good.

how many military bases operate in the red?

The fire department isn't turning a big enough profit you say?

'Experts' in what? Certainly not government services.

you should see how far in the red military bases are. or, maybe, profit margin is the wrong way to view government services.

They could just Fire Dejoy

It used to do banking, did it not?

I just moved to your city, who wouldn't mind showing me interesting places?

Or we could stop expecting necessary public services to turn ab operating profit.

They could stop/limit delivering mail to rural areas to save money.
