In 2020, parts of the U.S. will experiment with Internet voting as a means to increase turnout. Some experts say that's a horrendous idea. Others view it as a necessary development to a dated system.

jennycohn1 - What are your thoughts about this turn to voting by phone? (I can guess, but would be interested in a thread with your views on this.)

I can see the scams already

Not me, give me paper all the way!

Actually thats a brilliant idea! Of all the personal data we spew out through our phones every day, why not add our vote as well, it shouldn't be any less secure. But that would make voter turn out so easy ....some politicians may not want that...

Hmmm. Let's see. In 2016, Russia tried to 'influence' our election with lame advertising and posts on sites that nobody reads. Couldn't really get to our voting system because so much of it was paper. Now you want to put it online? What genius suggested this?

Oh great, now ppl going to 'butt vote' for the wrong candidate. 🤔

NUjournos What an interesting route to take to try to increase voter activity for elections...considering the scandal with Russia last year and uncertainty with data privacy I'm curious to see how this actually follows up. I'm ready to see how people battle out this controversy.

Abhorrent idea until cyber security measures are in place and proven

I just voted in PA and the new paper ballot system was like traveling back in time. My whole life I have voted on machines and now I had to fill in circles with a pen 🤯

Why aren’t we ALL voting by mail? It works perfectly, is convenient, leaves a paper ballot.

Will the Democrsts stoop to nothing to steal an election?

Twitter can’t even tell who’s a paid troll, and you trust the Internet with your vote?

Vote on phones? JFC

Trump will have it hacked

in absence of cyber-control by the traitor, this is candy for Putin and others.

Obamaphones ?

Not a good idea. You can lace it with unique crypto keys sent to everybody and it would still not be safe enough.

The old-fashioned way of voting is the safest. Mail-in votes should be re-introduced.

The internet is not secure. No results that are for federal positions should be accepted

Nope!!!

Hope not! Too easy to hack. Even DOD gets hacked. Stupid idea.

People can get off their ass once every year or 4 and go vote on a paper ballot. This is getting ridiculous

PAPER BALLOTS will help to prevent vote tampering.

As a PROFESSIONAL web services developer, I'd be EXTREMELY nervous about the security of such a voting mechanism. They can't keep hardware voting machines 100% hack-proof, what makes anyone think a web server as a voting mechanism is any safer?!!!!

Paper ballots

Oh hell no how lazy can ppl get

This is a terrible idea. If you want to know why, watch iamjohnoliver in his 11/3/19 episode! HandMarkedPaperBallots !

*Russians hearing this news*

I don’t think there is a secure way to do this! We should stick to paper and pencil! It is easy to hack anything online these days

Expect even more vote totals that exceed the total number of registered voters, or even residents, in Democrat dominated jurisdictions.

In my humble opinion this is a horrible le idea. It's like we are inviting election interference.

Go back to the old lever machines. Not fancy but there were no security issues. Just because a technology exists does not mean you have to use it.

Seems ok to try it out on a limited basis.

Hell no.

Yeah I don’t trust that at all

Terrible idea.

The Russians and the Chinese will have a field day.

Show us the parts that are and if those parts are gop controlled please. Clearly internet is 100% hackable. Voting needs paper ballots with very strong audit trails. Check out Washington state vote by mail. It’s inclusive, stamp and stress free

People seem to forget the power of internet voting Its how we got Boaty McBoatface

Those in favor will deny all responsibility when (not if) the system is hacked.

What could possibly go wrong.

Imagine looking for ways to increase voter turnout and instead of picking the obvious answer of making election day a national holiday coming up with this awful idea...

No. Just. No. Stupid idea.

Easily corruptible

best way to make sure the Dems win, right? cheat the system

Who are these 'experts' for Internet voting? The only experts quoted in the article (cybersecurity) were firmly against Internet voting. The only people quoted as favoring it were people who would profit from it, specifically the CEO and a lobbyist. Why would you both-sides this?

We need to start automatic voter registration, make election day a federal holiday, implement ranked choice voting, and pass DemocracyDollars at the federal level

At the unusual risk of my appearing to be a luddite, I think we need safer voting and verifiable paper ballots first. Especially with an authoritarian president who has no qualms with publicly asking Russia and China to hack emails.

That will be very unsecure! They are just begging to be hacked. Will a paper trail be implemented so these online votes can be audited and confirmed. I doubt it.

No voting off our phones!! NO NO NO. We know our phones arent safe. The voting booths have trouble. Hacking into the phones would be easy. Paper ballots is the only way to have a paper trail after RUSSIA 2016 AMERICAN ELECTIONS

So, even with the current hysteria over 'hacked' elections, hacked documents, etc, officials think it's a great idea to subject elections directly to the insecurity of the internet. One might wonder if the establishment WANTS that insecurity, or even just the impression of it.

If you were outraged by foreign influence in 2016, just wait for what's coming in 2020. 🙄

This would be the cherry on top of horrible ideas... WhatCouldPossiblyGoWrong

VerusCoin

Well, it will make foreign interference easier, if that’s your goal (looking at you, Republicans).

No way - in person or not at all! VoterID!

If it's secured, yes, it's necessary. Paper ballot counted by hand while supervisors from all parties are present continues to be the most secure way to approach elections.

Right Beebub! Feels like a bone throw.

Stupid idea. Voting is supposed to be an effort to do the right thing. And not let it be a click away for people who believe chocolate milk comes from brown cows. 🙄

Until the US has proper election security measures this is a horrible idea.

Nope

Whatever is needed so the Democrats can claim fraud, remember the main goal will be to claim the results are illegitimate! Then the media will help create social unrest until anarchy or Marshall law occur!

And yet they won’t go to vote-by-mail.

NPR Choice pageTrump fired his ass (John Bolton). What else is he doing that will conceivably enhance his image than this? Poor Dems. Their candidates are falling apart. No one able to beat Trump and they continue to spin their wheels, doing nothing to help DACA recipients, homeless, trade battles, cyber security, nothing at all. Nothing to run on.
