There's no way around it: Gandhi was a racist early in his life, says his biographer Ramachandra Guha.

Who else is on the racist, sexist, homophobe, hunt list? A small percentage of our country fall into these categories. No one should be victimized or abused but we need to take care of other things too. There are already laws to protect these groups.

Let’s go back in time and attack all!

Yeah, and Jesus thought all Samaritans were selfish.

Well while he was doing all that good he still held onto those beliefs and marginalized many communities in the process. As a south Asian I can attest that all of us have wide ranging opinions on him but no one can deny his legacy.

National propaganda radio

NPR and others, people do not care if at some point in his life Ghandhi had racist and a sexist thoughts and beliefs, the point is he discovered the error of his thinking and decided to change. It not where a person starts it's where they end.

We all have things in our past that were not proud of. Let people evolve and change.

I thought this was known already

Are any of you familiar with the Hindu religion at all? Because this is not new revealing information.

Abraham Lincoln was probably racist to some extent

Everyone has the capacity to learn and grow, Gandhi was no different.

We woke now, cancel Gandhi!

He was a racist and a pedophile everyone knew this except for liberals I guess..nothing new.

Nobody is perfect, but we can figure it out and become better.

S.. people do change. Anything new?

How do you measure a life? By any method, Gandhi has out measured any person on Twitter. There is no way around it

Thank you we knew that.

Why is this story in my feed AGAIN?🙄

Like NPR proving its racism with narrative directions!......According to their reports no African Americans, or Jewish faith people are racist, or won’t report on it! Proof that is conveniently ignored by intellectuals why racism?

🖕🏼 Gandhi... people don’t change, they just learn to lie better

Oh no. Gandhi has been cancelled. Also, MLK had the same opinion of homosexuality as Mike Pence

Ok I'm sorry, but I'm not gonna cancel Gandhi.

This is the insanity that happens when a society denies the existence of human nature.

...and then they came for Gandhi.

Pedophile

Cancel Gandhi!!!!!!!

I, for one, welcome NPR's canceling of Gandhi.

And it shows that people are capable of changing for the better.

Cease pretending to be of any importance except to a handful of Gynosaurs!

Why would you want a 'way around it?' Speak the truth. Humans are flawed and are also capable of growing out of their flaws. I encounter so many people who think racists can't learn or change. Nonsense.

all the great nationalists of the early 20th centiury got their start trafficking in racism. they moved on in most cases to something more sophisticated, elevated and historically resounding, but the racist veins they had mined remained.

Maybe our politicians are really good guys after all!?!

This guy has been dead for seven decades, who cares?

What is so wrong with being racist sexist homophobic ? Please enlighten us!!! Also stop judging people from the past by our modern standards!!! They lived in an entirely different world from ours. We need to respect that fact and accept it.

Every sinner has a future every saint has a past.

I wonder whether “early in his life” is an excuse to defend a racist, Ram_Guha ? His views on race, sexuality, and economics were regressive. His politics was not much better: He actively collaborated with a ruthless colonial regime. The hero-worship of this man is indefensible.

And a sexist

Um, he admitted that himself. His biographer didn’t stumble across new information there.

No doubt this is true or else what explains blood and mayhem during 1947 partition - it was genocide prompted by pretentious evil Gandhi

Very inappropriate and short-sighted caption. The fact that he learnt from his shortcomings of his early life was what made him great. That should be the story and lesson. Ram_Guha

If we all are judged by how we are early in life, we all are in trouble. Life is about growing and learning.

People are frustratingly complicated.

We’ve known this for awhile. That’s why I don’t know why he’s still quoted as some righteous hero.

It's ok to values parts of a person's legacy and despise other parts. There are no gods among men. And our heroes are never perfect.

Love when NPR post stories that don’t even fit its own narrative

And he was a Jet fan—

Is it really necessary to bring it up if he was? Lots of people have a way of thinking and as they get older and wiser it may change. Does thought when younger discredit all your good works? Why don't ya'lll stop trying to pick people apart?

People are multidimensional. They learn, grow, and mature. To pretend or believe that people like Gandhi are perfect is a childish mentality. The man can be respected for his good attributes and we can also acknowledge the bad.

Revisionists

Just like some Presidents of USA 🇺🇸 on dollar 💵 bill were slave owners

Cancelling ghandi. Wow npr

History always needs context from the era it was. Not context from the era we live in now. No doubt, humanity has come a long way since, but in terms of history, he was ahead of his time in many ways. He was also a product of his time in many other ways.

Are you going to fault him for objective observations? 🤨

While the kids in Hong Kong waved our American flags and sang “god bless America.” Trump was on the phone with Xi telling him the United States didn’t care about them. That is betrayal at the highest level. ICYMI, since it wasn’t covered by the media, hundreds marched in DC.
