Twenty-five years ago, Congress passed an assault weapons ban, prohibiting the manufacture or sale of certain weapons — like those used in Newtown, Parkland, El Paso and Dayton. But 10 years later, lawmakers let the ban expire.

I just want this to bite gun addicts in the ass. So worried about the extra steps to get guns that they equate it to a ban. Let’s see how they like a full ban. Police officers, too. I live w guns in the house, know how to shoot one, I also have a healthy fear of what they can do.

This is totally the GOP's fault. It's either inaction or obstruction, that's all you're gonna get from repukagains.

No guns really helped the UK...

‘s anti-gun reports 999 / pro-gun zero ... thanks for far and balanced. Please remove the P because you don’t reflect everyone in this country.

mentality & emotional vs the weapons of the self protection systems for the land.can see the case of cases & guns knife & other attack of criminality, that the mentality made the criminal & guns only will not start the criminal on the land.the real ban for the mental & criminal?

Because it had no affect on gun violence. Only idiots want to bring it back

We NEVER take the Right to bear arms away from Americans. Unless you want to become 'they'...

250 years ago people had 'slaves' ... NPR = Regressive

Matsuhiro クリントン政権(1994年)の時に禁止して、ブッシュJr.政権(2004年)の時に復活したということですね。

jnesky88 And rightly so.

$$$💔

Inconceivable!

Consecutive cowards is why.

Think the reinstatement was complete lunacy!

AssaultWeaponsBan now DoSomething

Did the lapse have the desired effect ? I ask not in jest. Muse upon this.

The galactic stupidity of liberals and NPR - their first argument is that it would prevent the rapid conversion of certain firearms to automatic fire......which hasn’t occurred in a mass shooting (ever?) Focus on the mental illness and enforce the laws we already have. Derp

Yep because it makes no difference why infringe for no benefit

This was during the W years. At the time, it was horrifying to watch Congress quietly let it die. Fortunately, the NRA (read: gun lobby) has far less power now; and we are far more organized & outraged. AssaultWeaponsBan

We dont live in a moral/ethical world.. We live in an economic world. So, you can see the dilemma.

Because Republicans.

If we would give up the 2nd Amendment... Then could all be happy little slaves to our government overlords. Just like the DNC and desire.

'... the number of criminal background checks for people wanting to purchase a gun or get a permit has surged in the last four months. It's been a 13% increase over the same period last year; that is more than a million additional federal background checks for gun owners.'

You blame trump for El Paso yet dont mention the Dayton shooter was antifa and supported Elizabeth Warren

Why did they write a law with an expiration date? They don’t have expiration dates on their salary increases.

Want to add any facts about whether it helped? And it expired because that is the way the law was written. No big surprise waiting in the article. Honestly. What happened to reporting.

Lawmakers, doesn’t that mean Congress and the Senate, just asking ...

Guns are not the problem. Only if your stupid would you think guns are the problem. Wake up

I'm sure glad there were no mass shootings during that period. /s

It was as unconstitutional then as it would be now.

Why was it possible for the ban to expire in the first place?

Still had Columbine.

Because Obama

Good.

BECAUSE BUSH WAS SCARED AFTER 9/11 AND EVERYBODY THOUGHT WE SHOULD ALL ARM OURSELVES !!!

Probably because the ban had no impact on people's behavior. Guns don't kill folks, people do.

Assault weapons ban circa 25 yrs ago does not apply to modern AR15’s. California redefined what is meant by assault rifle (SB880). The definition of AW as recognized by most states is not consistent w/CA. These variations confuse and muddy the discussion.

The first duty of lawmakers should be to protect the lives of citizens, not the coffers of the NRA and their own election prospects.

NPR Choice pageAnd who determines who is or isn’t acceptable? That’s right, the government. Negates the whole point of the 2nd Amendment. “Intelligent” and “Trump” in the same sentence?! I wish media & others would stop talking about background checks as a significant issue. It's not. As long as assault weapons & huge amounts of ammo are available, there will be mass shootings. Additional GunControl is needed to reduce the number of overall gun deaths.injuries.
