Opinion: For those struggling to use 'they' as a singular pronoun, linguist Geoff Nunberg says: Just practice. 'It takes some practice to get the hang of it, but the human language processing capacity is more adaptable than people realize,' Nunberg writes.

wouldn’t simply using their name simplify things? just asking for a simple friend.

Shouldn't it take just as much effort to accept 'guys' as gender neutral?

OR... don’t take the time to adapt to ridiculous things

Just call them 'IT' for singular; 'ITS' for plural. This is all utter nonsense. Waste of time, waste of effort, waste of money (for any changes to books, papers, etc.)

nprfreshair Buffoons.

Why are people so angry about this in the comments? Why do those who claim to be so well educated refuse to listen to people with different experiences than them? And what's more, claim that the feelings of those people do not matter in this particular situation. I don't get it.

They is? No, that will never work. We hear that from the under-educated. And those who value education will never accept speech like this.

Yawn.

The Metric System was a good idea, but it didn't catch on either.

That would be pretending there are more than two genders. There are not. You are entitled to disagree with me.

Serious question: What's wrong with using 'it'? 'It' is already a singular, gender neutral pronoun.

nprfreshair Just stop. Please, just stop.

nprfreshair Let’s say you call a plumbing service to unplug a drain in your home and you don’t know the gender of the person coming. I’ll bet you say “they” are coming automatically.

nprfreshair English being my second language I have to say this is confusing 😬

Really enjoying blocking all the unadaptable people in this thread.

Got it, comrade.

“In everyday speech we often use that pronoun for a single person”. This one sentence should be the whole article. “They” as a singular pronoun is grammatically correct.

If you're struggling with that, whatever you do don't try to wrap your head around Turkish. Geez, come on.

messybina

They just got unfollowed. And they are right, it’s not about pronouns.

I use it all the time..as a nurse when referring to other nurses..I don’t like using silly terms like “male nurse”.

“Like the classic episodes of pronoun rage in earlier eras, these aren't about pronouns at all.”

Can't anybody come up with an alternative?! Yes, 'they' is awkward for many addressing one person. But perhaps the plural fits.

Unless I am describing a group I will not use 'they'. To be honest, its just silly and stupid otherwise.

Nope, my speech runs FREE

Most of us have been saying 'to each their own' forever. It's not that big a deal.

Just practice this butchering of the language. They is plural. It should NEVER be used to refer a single individual. Language highly impacts thought. Control thought by controlling language.

This article is ignorant and insensitive

If someone asked me nicely to refer to them by their pronoun, I would. It's common courtesy. But it's also important to not take offense if folks use the wrong one... Now if they do it consistently and on purpose with no regard for anyone else, they should be called out

👏 There 👏 is 👏 no 👏 excuse

When they can have us divided on the most basic fact of human existence and then punish those that refuse to comply...wake up America! You don’t have the right to not be offended. And stop being offended at the smallest things. Creating a weak, fearful and ignorant generation.

Yeah no.

If there was only one word but no the list grows each day.

practice and gentle reminders are all it takes. if you don't want to respect someone's identity, just let them know straight up that you're an asshole and you can both move on 😊

I get it, but the quote and the way the tweet is worded, seems like an example of newspeak straight out of 1984. lol

I refuse. A male is a he, him or sir. A female is a she, her, or mam, or other appropriate traditional to their gender as defined by birth genitalia. This insanity needs to be called out for what it is.

This is what it’s come to, the majority having to tip-toe around the emotional instability of the few all because of political correctness. I’m looking forward to pushback.

Some years ago it was suggested to use hir for singular possessive rather than either her or him. That went over like the proverbial lead balloon.

Fuck. That.

🤦‍♂️

4891 just takes practice.

But, it’s still wrong!

So weird. When writing as a kid using they to describe a person or character seemed natural to me. If not for all the negative feedback from teachers, I would’ve continued to use the word to describe anyone. As a kid the difference of he/she didn’t matter to me. imweird

No.

Huh? Why would anyone do that anyway?

He She It, INGSOC lemmings.

Or, people aren't going to change everything about how they communicate in order to placate your feelings

No thank you.

Malarkey.

No problem at all with people choosing a gender, but choosing to be multiple people is gonna be awkward for a while.

I just won't, how bout dat

NPR Choice page🙄 Good. Chinese students are a national security risk and should be denied access to America and our universities. China is our enemy; we’ve got to start treating them as one. And it begins with reserving the best universities in the world for American students. China...WORLD DOMINATION and how could the 'intellectuals' miss that?
