When we ask, 'How much should a teacher be paid?' what we're really asking is 'How do we get great teachers to choose to be a teacher and not, say, a lawyer ($144,230) or an engineer ($99,230) or something else?'

Disgusting rehash of corporate takeover spin.. , you're so corrupted by money from the Walton Family Foundation you have zero credibility. I'm done. I hate now.

virtualcourtney It's a fool's errand. Just like we cant (and shouldnt) artificially increase a worker's pay on the verge of automation, we shouldn't increase it for teachers whose job is even more useless than an assembly line worker. This 'job' needs to disappear.

Great teachers already teach! I have a Masters and doctorate and choose to teach public school. That’s the point of public service. We deserve to be well compensated, but we do it without because we believe in education.

elliswonk '...teachers don't get to fully share in all the benefits they create. In economic terms, that's a positive externality, and it's a big reason why we should pay them more.' This is not a positive externality. It is a consumer surplus.

How about those who vote against increased wages, teach their own children?

My son, 16, has always had the “teacher” in him, but he will not pursue this career path because of low pay. This makes me sad, because he would make an incredible teacher. How many others shy away for the same or similar reasons?

Why are you asking economists what they think and not educational professionals? This sort of thinking is exactly the problem.

Where can I read about what teachers think about education proposals?

Nostalgia for Bush/Obama education policies and Waiting for Superman? 🤦‍♂️

What about social workers? We are the unappreciated, forgotten, overworked, highly-educated professionals who stop people from killing themselves and others. We make a median salary of $50K (with a master’s degree), and, unlike teachers, we don’t get our summers off.

How about we pay teachers what we pay lawmakers? $174k sounds reasonable to me. How about you all?

Both of those professions actually have standards and requirements to prove knowledge and up to date knowledge. Hummmm, maybe if we tried that with teachers?

Perks...like, teach for 10+ years and get a life time of insurance like the senators get. I mean, there isn't a single senator or representative that can say they never had a teacher, so equal perks.

1.3 millions lawyers in America. 3.6 Million elementary and Middle School teachers in America. Call a math teacher and work out why they can't expect the same pay.

“One problem with tying teacher pay to student performance is that performance is hard to measure.” Understatement. Some teachers end up saving and producing lots of money for society and students, respectively, by developing social-emotional health - rarely shows on test scores.

First, we can’t just across the board compare teachers’ pay with other countries. Other countries don’t saddle their students with debt and have lower healthcare costs than the US. I pay nearly $600/mo in student loans and $250/mo in health insurance. $10,200/yr.

Resigned teacher with a Master’s degree +20 here. This article is fundamentally flawed strictly in its association of high performing teachers with increased student incomes. I’d like to see more data on the classroom diversity. 1/2

I think 'How many hundreds of thousands of dollars, or potentially more, should districts increase teacher pay/retirement benefits?' is a fair question. Also a fair question is 'How can a small, rural district afford to do this?' Any ideas?

Probably start with full-time work (12 months/year) for full-time pay.

The problem is administrators make lawyer and engineer money while doing little, if anything at all, “for the children.” Less administrators = more money to increase teacher pay. Problem solved. And I only minored in Econ.

By having a merit based system and aboloshing unions. That's how you do it.

Most go into teaching for the rewarding career, not the money. Look at every striking union of teachers this year. They asked for min. pay inc. , BUT emphasized fair teaching conditions. Lower class sizes, nurses in all schs, more social wrks ... Yeah, inc. salaries would help !

How many lawyers and engineers get weekends, holidays and the summer off? And teachers unions won't allow you to reward the good teachers as it will offend the bad ones.

Offer better financial aid for people who want to become teachers, so they don't graduate with a bunch of debt. Offer housing programs & perks, etc. And then just effing pay them a reasonable wage for a professional of their education level in the area where they live.

Pay teachers lawyers’ salaries. We train them.

Pay politicians less

Those professions work year round. Teachers work 9 months of the year.

Maybe ask yourself how can you can great people engineers, doctors and lawyers to work part time as a teacher? Where im studying engineering most of my professors are all working part time. They are all licensed engineers, and they told me that they enjoy teaching but the pay...

Great teachers have already chosen to be teachers. Some, are incredibly smart, care deeply about their content & students & would have made 3X their pay in the private sector. Teachers are inundated by overcrowded classrooms, delapidated schools, politics, & unrealistic...

You dont need to ask that question. Many teachers could never do either of those jobs.

IMO since schools have state oversight & use state taxes therefore all publicschools should pay teachers the same! Any student in the same state should have equal access to tech, core curriculum, equal class size etc etc

Certainly teachers deserve good pay but what they shouldn’t have is tenure. Too many bad teachers holding onto jobs they don’t deserve.

You could also try to make the job not as needlessly difficult.

That ain't the ish, though. If you ain't repping sports or entertainment you ain't down with kidz. Am I right, Joe_Gatto , BQQuinn , SalVulcano ? Cc: truTVjokers

That’s the problem! Attracting really smart people with good communication skills to teaching. Who can afford to pay thousands of teachers $100k for 9 months work.

I take issue with the statement “teaching requires a college degree. That comes with debt”. Debt is a choice. I grew up in a mobile home on a dirt road and graduated college debt free. I’ve been a teacher 14 years. My pay has only gone up a few grand. But Debt is always a choice.

Teacher teach from an established and approved curriculum. No other profession has it easier.

Plenty of publicly employed lawyers making far below 144k. Particularly those with less than 10 yrs of experience. Same for engineers.

TEACHERS DESERVE HIGHER PAY southern states have teachers without college degrees due to the low pay offered We are also losing them to private schools and universities Many teachers use their own money for neccessary supplies.. SHAMEFUL

Vouchers, this will get rid of all the useless adminstrations in schools. This will get rid of all the aweful teachers the Union is able to hide in the system. voucher

False & incomplete analysis. Most lawyers & engineers do not have lobbies that deliberately backend their compensation in the form of pensions (esp not at a guaranteed 7% ROI) & negotiate 3 mos of vacation + fed/state holidays. Public & private sectors attract workers differently

They should make as much as congress members. There are only 535 of them. I bet if the salaries were adjusted, we'd get a lot more congress members that were in it because they just cared about the country and its citizens.

Lawyers and engineers work in the private sector. Teachers are a publicly funded position. They are funded by the public because we as a society cannot afford to have uneducated children.

Give the teachers $30.00 a hour.

A great teacher would make a lousy lawyer, the same way a great lawyer would make a lousy teacher. Totally different skills and personality needed.

Hmm... how does a college freshman know they are a great teacher? Isn’t starting salary the key? Plenty of 5-10 yr teachers leaving for better paying jobs. But to be doctors? Hmm....
