Around 70,000 Rohingya civilians are trapped in Maungdaw, facing a military offensive with no escape.

Tens of thousands of Rohingya, who were feared to be trapped amid fighting in western Myanmar, have nowhere to flee, the United Nations human rights chief has said.

"I am very concerned about the situation in Maungdaw. The Arakan Army this weekend gave all remaining residents — including a large Rohingya population — a warning to evacuate," Volker Turk, the UN high commissioner for human rights, told the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva on Tuesday.The Rohingya have faced persecution in Myanmar for decades.
