Conclusion: Objective and Subjective Reports of Childhood Abuse
In conclusion, it appears those who “construe their childhood experiences as maltreatment,” regardless of a documented history, have a high risk for mental illness. We need to investigate why certain individuals develop a subjective appraisal of abuse when there is no objective evidence for maltreatment. Some areas of study include suggestibility, as well as perception and memory biases related toAnd we need to understand why some abused children perceive and remember their experiences as maltreatment and others do not.
Last, it is important we do not use the data to reach the wrong conclusions, such as assuming that abusing children is not so bad if they are not terribly affected by it subjectively , years later. As the authors note, these findings “do not diminish the significance of maltreatment in the lives of children. Maltreatment is a fundamental breach in the human rights of children and it is a moral duty to protect them from abuse and neglect.
agreed, mostly it depends on the personality how to cope with abuse. i wont forget what that one girl who has been abused for 17y. said to me 'My life was a disaster but in life we can choose whoever we are and I have chosen for me and my health that I am not a victim of my past'
agreed. I've met several people who have been abused and i'll never forget what that one girl who has been hit for 17years said to me 'Yes my life was a disaster but in life we can choose whoever we are and I have chosen for me and my health that I am not a victim of my past'
I think it depends on the conditioned environment post abuse or maltreatment that helps to ameliorate the potential development of mental illness
Neglect plays a more significant role than abuse. A child can overcome abuse, and not develop a mental health issue, if they have good supports in their life. But neglect seems to leave a deeper and longer lasting wound.
If you cant remember being abused, guess what, maybe you havent been abused. Simple as that. NO ONE FORGET BEING ABUSED. Repress it yes, forget, no
This is probably the biggest shit I have read in my entire life. Whoever did this research should be ashamed
Eh, have no memory of it? Do you know how memory works?
Yes they do. Just a matter of time
Have you considered that ppl without “objective” evidence of abuse are at higher risk d/t invalidation, both internalized or from others? Unnamed/covert abuse is worse. It can’t be processed, maybe you blame yourself. Seems to me also dissociation plays role in the memory loss.
I literally can not believe someone was paid to study this No, not everyone who experienced abuse/maltreatment in childhood develops a mental illness Conversely, some children from good loving homes may develop a mental illness 🙄
This goes with the adage 'Back in my day' 'It was much tougher'. Considering the recollected perception can either be recounted as good, bad or just normal for that time.
All I can say is I did, including all the symptoms such as substance abuse, poor handling of relationships and serious struggle to thrive. How could one not?
What has helped me most is to think of my issues is as a scarcity of resources. It takes most of the hurt away.
This is true enough. It's the treatment you receive at the hands of government and the police that does that... Every FCUKING time... No recovery... Just withdrawal... Angst and hatred... Waiting for the bomb those bastards built to explode!...💣💥😠👍
Protective factors and adopting natural coping mechanisms are a factor.
