Not a quarterback, THE quarterback: Inside C.J. Stroud’s transformation into Ohio State football’s franchise quarterback

INDIANAPOLIS -- C.J. Stroud quietly walked up to the podium on July 27 to speak on the upcoming Ohio State football season at Big Ten Media Days.him a minute to sit down. He struggled to unbutton the blazer to his all-black formal attire that synchronized with fellow teammates Ronnie Hickman and Jaxon Smith-Njigba, who were also in attendance.

At that podium, facing the chaos around him, he sat back as cool as ever, answering questions and interacting with each person as if he’d known them for years. It’s one of his best greatest assets as a leader and part of why he was voted a captain this season. But there was another variable at play as well. Stroud was trying to get comfortable in his newfound fame, whether that be answering questions a little too honestly or just getting used to having people staring at him out in public.

But he does control how he operates in this space, and too often, he wasn’t helping his case. By nature, Stroud is a genuine person. He’s not one to sugarcoat things. He’d rather be as real as possible. It’s a good trait to have in life, but sometimes blunt responses can backfire when you’re a starting quarterback.

There’s truth in that statement, but there’s also a better way to convey that message. It’s a lesson he had to learn. “Part of being a leader is everybody’s watching you, everybody’s listening to you, everybody’s feeling you,” strength coach Mickey Marotti said. “If you don’t have those three characteristics of being seen, being heard and being felt, then you’re really not a leader.“He always tells me, ‘I’m just a quarterback.’ And I’d go, ‘I know, you areStroud didn’t look like a football player when he first got to Columbus in January 2020. He was tall, skinny and lanky, weighing 189 pounds with a strong arm.
