As I cycle through anxiety, depression, grief, anger, and a million other emotions triggered by my current situation, the old pop-punk anthems, angsty emo ballads, and soft acoustic lullabies I listened to and loved as a teen now set my heart at ease.

After a lot of experimentation, I’ve found that one of my most reliable forms of pandemic self-care has also turned out to be the most unexpected: nostalgia.

I realized why only recently: I was a teen who often felt misunderstood and trapped, who struggled with untreated depression, abuse, and. Everything about my situation felt big, raw, inescapable. Without the vocabulary to describe what I was dealing with or the coping mechanisms I eventually learned as an adult, music was my main source of comfort.
