Whatever light they might shed on the candidates' own leanings, the money, along with multiplying endorsements from Republican and Democratic politicians and allied groups, reflects a new reality for traditionally nonpartisan school board contests. Garcia, 52, is one of Lopez’s two challengers but had not responded to previous interview requests, including an invitation from the Express-News Editorial Board. He works in video production and said Tuesday that he had raised about $1,600, some of it from a pulled-pork fundraiser.
Parents United for Freedom is active statewide in promoting social conservatism and fighting what it calls “harmful indoctrination” in schools, and the Family Association also campaigns for traditional values and against abortion rights. Both have successfully backed candidates in neighboring North East ISD.
“I’m not sure where they got 'Hard Republican,'” Chumbley said. “I’ve voted in Republican elections. I voted in Democratic primaries.”Campaign finance reports show Chumbley, Lopez and Bobby Blount, the longtime District 4 incumbent, benefited from a PAC that recently formed to promote “stability” on the Northside ISD board.
