on our nation’s most vulnerable populations. The bar for Trump isn’t just low at this point; it’s buried miles underground.

Much has been discussed about if we — Democrats, Republicans, voters in general, our traditional political and media institutions — have learned anything over the past half decade of dealing with Trump, ever since he came down. We’ll know how many of those groups of Americans feel after Election Day, but as far as I can tell, many in government and the media seem to have taken very little to heart, no matter how much the president derides and insults them, their constituents, and audiences.

Therein lies the bigger concern: Even if Trump loses on November 3, what’s to say that our political and media institutions won’t latch onto someone far stealthier and more adept in the future? Donald Trump has always been a ridiculous, larger-than-life caricature, but what happens when a person who represents the next iteration of him — a sleeker, smarter, more palatable version — enters the zeitgeist? It appears that we still aren’t prepared for that inevitability.

Now onto the more pressing question of the hour: Will this final debate change much heading into Election Day? Probably not. Recent reports show that
