Photo: ascg Photography/Getty Images In some parts of the country, kids have already gone back to school. In others, schools, administrators, and parents are still scrambling to figure out exactly what back to school will mean this fall. Seventeen conversations with parents included worries about endangering their families, worries about endangering the teachers and staff members at their children’s schools, and worries about the future of public education.
I kind of wish the teachers would strike if they’re asked to go back to school, and I would support them if they do. I saw this tweet where someone was like, “Who cares if kids are behind? What does that even mean? I want my kids alive.” I just feel like that should be the guidepost. It’s not acceptable to sacrifice people’s lives just to — for what goal?
“I don’t know that, as a 13-year-old boy, he quite understands that school is going to look a lot different this year.”I really worry about the ability of our teachers. We’re not just putting our children possibly at risk but our teachers and our teaching staff. How are they going to handle it? Even if the kids are rotating weeks, our teachers are still there every day.
I think it’s a pretty straightforward decision at this point. It’s worse now than it was when schools first closed. I’m worried about their socialization and their educational development, but it seems straightforward. I’m glad I don’t have to put the teachers in a position where they feel uncomfortable about going to work. It doesn’t seem fair for them. I don’t think it’s right that we’re in a position right now that teachers are being asked to put themselves at risk.
Go back to school...are you going to stay home forever? The virus is now here forever! We’ll have to learn to live with it...wear a mask, wash your hands, keep your distance....get on with it!
Anything short of 'people will die if we do this' are just this:
Perhaps it means it’s better to let them behind in school, instead of sick or dead from the virus.
If teachers are afraid there is an option.
Honestly, the danger to US from COVID19 is OVER! 'Covid-19 measures – how far should they go & when should they stop?' This coronavirus has an Infection Fatality Rate (IFR) of approx 0.24% (for comparison flu IFR is betw 0.1-0.2%). No more fear.
There is such desperation about not just dealing with the present, or even concern about the future, but a gut demand for 'normal.' And so people are making awful, awful mistakes, either feeling that desperation or manipulating it.
Yep. Teacher and Admin life matters.
keep 'em shuttered til 2021
AshMobleyW At this point, everyone knows what to do about school. The issue is nobody is doing it while hoping for some effortless miracle.
