“There is no military training value for what we do,” he told the Senate Appropriations Committee during a hearing on the National Guard’s budget. “That time, I think, would be better utilized building readiness to deter our adversaries.” The Guard members are serving under U.S. Northern Command, which is responsible for defending the continental U.S. and Alaska. There are additional Guard members who were deployed to the border by governors and are under state control.
