'No major closures planned' at 1604 and I-10 over holiday weekend

Taking a vacation for Memorial Day weekend? So are construction crews at Loop 1604 . In a rare treat for drivers, there will be no construction closures at Loop 1604 and I-10 from Friday to Monday, the Texas Department of Transportation announced Tuesday. Major closures have caused backups weekend after weekend as crews work on TxDOT's Loop 1604 North Expansion Project, which will take the expressway from four lanes to 10 in an effort to ease traffic and improve safety.

Last weekend, crews opened two new lanes heading eastbound from I-10 to Blanco Road and westbound from Stone Oak Parkway to Lockhill Selma Road. The new lane openings expanded Loop 1604 to six lanes across. While construction crews are getting a weekend off, the Texas Department of Public Safety is just gearing up for holiday traffic. Law enforcement will be on the lookout for impaired drivers, and anyone heading out of town should be prepared to tap the brakes.
