One editor reminisces about Villanova's 1985 win, a perfect reminder to never underestimate the underdog.

For almost any sports fan, there is no two-and-half-week period quite like March Madness, the addictively compelling tournament that caps off the college basketball season each year.

Over the years, I’ve watched the games without fail—on my TV at home, at neighborhood bars filled with rabid fans, on my desktop computer at work . I’ve even been known to book an occasional weekend getaway, where my entire itinerary is to watch the games from my hotel room while ordering room service.

The tournament that year was historic. It was the first time the field had been expanded to 64 teams—giving birth to what has since become known as March Madness—and Georgetown, Villanova, and St. John’s were all in the Final Four, theGeorgetown and St. John’s were considered the best teams in the country, each led by a future Hall of Famer: Patrick Ewing and Chris Mullin, respectively.
